Schweikert Honors Dr. C.T. Wright at Fountain Hills Post Office Dedication Ceremony

FOUNTAIN HILLS — Today, U.S. Congressman David Schweikert (AZ-01) participated in a dedication ceremony of the Fountain Hills Post Office in honor of Dr. C.T. Wright for his devotion to public service and meaningful contributions that left a remarkable impact on countless Arizona communities.

Congressman Schweikert was joined by Fountain Hills Mayor Ginny Dickey, U.S. Postal Service Arizona/New Mexico District Manager John Morgan, and Dr. Wright’s niece, Dr. Olivet James-Robinson, as they reflected on the life and legacy of Dr. Wright.

Dr. Wright’s relatives were presented a plaque commemorating the renaming of the post office as the “Dr. C.T. Wright Post Office Building” and given a red line copy of the Public Law that Congressman Schweikert shepherded through Congress, as well as a framing of the Congressional Record marking the day the legislation passed the U.S. House of Representatives.

“This is a reward for someone who took on brutal challenges and overcame them. He never let the battles darken his soul. We are all better as individuals and a community because the Wrights chose to spend part of their lives with us. And that’s what makes this such a moral, special occasion,” said Congressman Schweikert.

Background:

  • Dr. C.T. Wright was a passionate educator, bringing his expertise to many of the country’s historically black colleges. In the years following his time teaching, Dr. Wright shifted his focus more broadly to help with human rights. He was the founder of Light of Hope Institute. For the last 21 years of his life, Dr. Wright was a resident of Arizona. As a figurehead in the local community, he served in several capacities, including Chairman of the Arizona Board of Executive Clemency; member of the Fountain Hills Unified School District Governing Board; President of the Fountain Hills Kiwanis Club; and President of the Arizona African Society.
  • On October 20, 2021, Congressman Schweikert introduced legislation designating the Fountain Hills Post Office as the “Dr. C.T. Wright Post Office Building” in Dr. Wright’s honor for his distinguished achievements and contributions to countless Arizona communities.
  • After unanimously passing both the Senate and House of Representatives, this legislation was signed into law as Public Law No: 117-279 on December 27, 2022.
