REP LIEU STATEMENT ON INTRODUCTION OF THE JOHN R. LEWIS VOTING RIGHTS ADVANCEMENT ACT

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) issued the following statement on the introduction of H.R. 4, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, of which he is an original cosponsor. This critical legislation would protect voters against discrimination by restoring and strengthening key provisions in the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA), which were gutted by the Supreme Court in the 2013 Shelby County v. Holder decision and the 2021 Brnovich v. DNC decision.

Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and commend Representative Terri Sewell, the Judiciary Committee and House leadership for their work on this monumental legislation. The right to vote is the most sacred right we have as Americans. Across the country, we are witnessing a coordinated state-level attack on voting rights, and federal action is needed. This legislation will help ensure every American has equal access to the ballot box by preventing states with a history of voter discrimination from restricting the freedom to vote. Today, with the introduction of this legislation, we honor the legacy of John Lewis and other brave Americans who fought and bled for the right of all Americans to vote, and strive to keep the promise of democracy alive for us all."
