Rep. Mike Levin Announces Beginning of San Clemente Sand Replenishment Project

More than $9 Million in Federal Funds Secured by Rep. Levin Drive Project Forward

San Clemente, CA- Rep. Mike Levin (CA-49) today announced that the San Clemente Shoreline Protection Project to replenish sand along the San Clemente coastline will begin on December 15, 2023. The project involves placing 251,000 cubic yards of sand on the beach and is expected to be completed in January 2024.

The sand will be placed on the beach from Linda Lane to T-Street, a distance of about 3,400 feet. It will widen the beach about 50 feet to provide storm damage reduction, safety, and recreational benefits for the public. Rep. Levin secured $9.3 million in federal funding for the San Clemente Shoreline Protection Project in the Fiscal Year 2022 government funding bill.

The project will also provide protection for the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo Rail Corridor (LOSSAN Corridor) -- the second busiest rail corridor in the country -- where the tracks run immediately adjacent to the San Clemente coast. The investment will protect this vital rail line as well as roads, buildings, and other infrastructure, while preserving recreational use of San Clemente’s coastline impacted by beach erosion.

“One of my top priorities is delivering federal resources to tackle our local priorities and challenges, and I am thrilled that this project is now underway. The sand replenishment work will protect our beaches, ensure their viability for years to come, and address some of the pressing coastal issues facing our region,” said Rep. Levin. “I look forward to the completion of this important project in the coming months and for the community to enjoy our incredible beaches.”

“This is a terrific milestone for our community and everyone who cares about protecting our coastal resources and local small businesses. And it’s because of our partnership with leaders like Congressman Levin who deliver real results that we’re able to stand here with our toes in the sand in beautiful San Clemente,” said San Clemente Mayor Chris Duncan.

A second sand replenishment project, the Encinitas-Solana Beach Coastal Storm Damage Reduction Project, will begin in the coming weeks. That will involve placing 700,000 cubic yards of sand along 7,200 feet of beach in Solana Beach and 340,000 cubic yards of sand along 7,800 feet of beach in Encinitas. Rep. Levin secured $32 million in federal funding for the Encinitas-Solana Beach Coastal Storm Damage Reduction Project.
