TCC has opened an expanded food pantry on campus to help students who need assistance.

The TCC Talon’s Market hosting Thanksgiving Meal giveaway for students

Tallahassee Community College Talon’s Market is hosting a Thanksgiving Meal Giveaway for 50 students from 11 a.m. to noon Friday, Nov. 20, at its main campus.

The first 50 students who make reservations for the 11 a.m. spot will receive a free bag of groceries to prepare a complete meal and a Walmart Gift card to buy a turkey.

Students must be present to receive their bag of groceries and gift card at the giveaway event. Reservations are open now until filled.

Since its inception, Talon’s Market has serviced more than 1,000 students.

TCC Model UN team continues virtual competition tour

Tallahassee Community College’s Model United Nations team recently participated in the National Model United Nations virtual conference in Washington, DC.

This was the second virtual conference the team has completed this semester.

Nine TCC students worked with over 400 delegates from 40 different colleges and universities across the world.  Those nine TCC students won a Distinguished Delegation award in recognition of their work at the conference.

The team is led this year by President Jeanie Morrison, and Vice President Sean Rutten. They were joined at the conference by TCC students Camille Beauchamp, Joseph Davis, Alaina Eyler, Jackelyn Feliciano, Jamey Harvey, McKenzie Kidd, and Kaitlyn Stroud.

TCC announces new opportunities in apprenticeship courses

Tallahassee Community College is recognizing National Apprenticeship Week and the programs offered at the College.

The college is partnering with Independent Electrical Contractors to offer a 4-year certification program that includes training and instruction for occupations in the electrical industry.

It also is partnering with Jacksonville Plumbers & Pipefitters Joint Apprenticeship & Training Trust to offer a 5-year certification program that offers training for plumbers, pipefitters, and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning technicians.

TCC is now accepting applications for the pre-apprenticeship programs. Limited spots are available. There is no tuition cost for the programs and the earned industry certifications are recognized throughout the U.S.

Four FAMU business administration majors named Southern Glazer Scholars

Four Florida A&M University students have been named as the first recipients of the Southern Glazer’s Against Social Injustice and Racial Inequality Endowed Scholarship Fund.

The Southern Glazer's Wine and Spirits Social Justice Scholars receive $2,500 each for the fall 2020/spring 2021 academic year.

The scholars are:

FAMU alumna, CBS VP honored by National Association of Black Journalists

Florida A&M University alumna Kim Godwin, executive vice president of news at CBS News, has been honored with the Ida B. Wells Award from the National Association of Black Journalists.

The Ida B. Wells Award is presented annually by the NABJ and the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, to honor an individual who has provided distinguished leadership in increasing access and opportunities to people of color in journalism and improving the coverage of communities of color in American media. 

As executive vice president of news, Godwin has top editorial oversight of newsgathering around the world for CBS News, including the national desks, foreign desks and bureaus.

The 1984 graduate is currently the chair of the SJGC Board of Visitors.

USDA offers scholarships for students attending HBCUs, Tribal Colleges and Universities

Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried is encouraging students attending eligible HBCUs and Tribal Colleges and Universities to apply for scholarships announced last week by the US Department of Agriculture.

The USDA/1890 National Scholars Program was established in 1992 in partnership between USDA and 19 historically black universities that were established under the Second Morrill Act of 1890.

The USDA 1994 Tribal Scholars Program was established in 2008 in partnership between USDA and 1994 institutions, tribally controlled colleges and universities with land-grant status.

FSU’s Interdisciplinary Center for Athletic Coaching partners with NCEA

Florida State University’s Interdisciplinary Center for Athletic Coaching, known as FSU COACH, has formed a new partnership with the National Collegiate Equestrian Association.

As part of the partnership, FSU COACH will be the official coach education provider for the NCEA.

FSU COACH will assist NCEA in developing an introductory coaching education program, along with educational materials for NCEA’s current and incoming coaches.

Housed in the FSU College of Education, the center currently offers an online graduate certificate program in athletic coaching.

FSU offers certification training in human traffic prevention and intervention

Florida State University has launched a new online certification in human trafficking prevention and intervention to help professionals develop skills to better understand the dynamics of the various types of human trafficking.

Professionals also will learn of the effect of trauma on victims/survivors and how to provide victim-centered trauma-informed services.

Participants will learn of innovative community assistance programs for victims being implemented nationwide.

This self-paced curriculum includes seven chapters and 12 hours of course content with research-based readings, case scenarios, multimedia materials, assignments and quizzes.
