Hoyer Advocates for $2 Million for Water Infrastructure for the City of Bowie

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) applauded the inclusion of $2 million in funding for Fifth District water infrastructure projects for the city of Bowie in the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies funding legislation for Fiscal Year 2022. The funding would strengthen water infrastructure by replacing one mile of deteriorating water pipes in the city of Bowie and repair poorly damaged water systems to ensure healthy water quality for Bowie residents. The city's water pipes were built in the 1960s and suffer from severe tuberculation, which causes flow restrictions and dirty water.

"No community should have to worry about the quality of their water, which is why I worked hard to secure $2 million in funding to replace corroding water pipes in the city of Bowie, " said Congressman Hoyer. "All Marylanders deserve access to clean water, and this funding will ensure households throughout Bowie have the necessary infrastructure in place to provide this. I will continue to put the health and well-being of Fifth District families first, and work to improve our aging water systems while also advocating for comprehensive improvements to infrastructure systems throughout the Fifth District."

The legislation now goes to the House Appropriations Committee for consideration before receiving a vote in the House. If enacted into law, the funding would be awarded through United States Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) State and Tribal Assistance Grants. Funding for this project was requested by Congressman Hoyer through the House Committee on Appropriations' Community Project Funding process. Each Member is limited to no more than 10 Community Project Funding requests. Combined earmarks are capped at 1% of all discretionary spending.
