Everyone age 16 and older in Michigan would be eligible to get the COVID-19 vaccine starting April 5, 2021.

The Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department opened up first come, first serve COVID-19 vaccine appointments to those eligible every Monday, if clinics are scheduled that week.

On March 15, Kalamazoo community members said appointments were filling up in minutes.

Health leaders said it was important to shop around when looking for a vaccine appointment.

“You will get your vaccine, right now we’re ahead of schedule and we’re going to get to you," said Family Health Center CEO Denise Crawford. "By the first week in April the governor has opened it up for everyone and we’re going to be ready.”

Crawford said the Family Health Center would host a drive-thru vaccine clinic on March 17 at Kalamazoo Central High School.

Those eligible could call 269-488-0804 to schedule an appointment.

Crawford said the week of March 15 would be the first time the Family Health Center received shipment of vaccine from the state.

The health center got about 400 doses. Crawford hoped they could get even more.

“We were asked if we are open and willing to take on more doses and if we can accommodate more doses, and our answer is yes," Crawford said.

In an effort to reach more vulnerable populations, Crawford said the Family Health Center partnered with the Kalamazoo County health department to vaccinate the homeless on March 16 at Ministry with Community.

“To really impact members of our community and to ensure that we are able to get to the most vulnerable," she said.
