A farmer and five others from Berrien County are heading to Kentucky to help with tornado recovery efforts.

The grower, who asked us not to report his name, is planning to head out with two 30 foot trucks loaded with supplies Thursday. He tells WSJM News they’ll have about 1,000 pounds of meat, along with refrigerators, stoves, and other tools. The plan is to head to the area of Hopkins County, Kentucky to set up in a large parking lot and serve up meals to responders and residents. They’re also going to take meals out to other communities.

Our farmer tells us he reached out to other Berrien County growers to ask for donations, and “everyone of them of them said yes,” which he found to be heartwarming. He tells us everyone he contacted asked the same question: “How can we help?”

The plan is to assess what the team could need after some time on the ground in Kentucky this week, and we could be hearing more later. He got the idea earlier this week and it all came together Wednesday. The team hopes to be up and running in Kentucky by Friday morning. They’re consulting with county Farm Bureaus in Kentucky as they head down.
