Walberg Questions Granholm on Line 5 Pipeline, Energy Security

May 19, 2021

Washington, D.C.—Today, during a House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee hearing, Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-07) pressed Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm about the Biden Administration's position on the continued operations of Line 5 in Michigan. In March, Walberg led a letter to President Biden about the consequences of shutting down Line 5 but has yet to receive a response. Click here to watch Walberg's questions at today's hearing.

"As we witnessed following the Colonial Pipeline cyberattack, even a temporary pipeline shutdown has a tremendous impact on a region's fuel supply and energy security. Yet the Whitmer Administration continues its misguided push for a permanent shut down of Line 5, which serves more than 50 percent of Michigan's propane needs," said Walberg. "Now is not the time to cause another regional—and possibly international—energy crisis by halting operations of a pipeline that we rely on each day. Despite Secretary Granholm's disappointing noncommittal answer today, I continue to call on the Biden Administration to support Line 5 and the affordable energy supply, good-paying jobs, and economic activity that it brings to Michigan."
