Washington, D.C.—Today, Congressman Tom Emmer (MN-06) announced his support for the new three-digit National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

“This change will provide Americans a shortcut to care,” Emmer said.  “For those experiencing a mental health crisis, even small barriers to treatment, like having to figure out where to turn for help, can be life-threatening. With the new 9-8-8 hotline, intervention will be as accessible and straightforward as it is for any other emergency.”

“We were proud to join this effort to ensure all Americans have readily-available mental health support in times of need,” Emmer concluded.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline transitions from (1-800-273-8255) to 9-8-8 on July 16, 2022.

Background:

For every individual who dies by suicide, 316 people seriously consider it. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline has received over 20 million calls from Americans since 2005.

In 2020, Congressman Emmer cosponsored the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act. The bill passed into law and was signed by President Donald Trump in October of that year.
