ST. CLOUD — U.S. Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., visited the St. Cloud VA Medical Center on Thursday, July 6, to speak with senior leadership about how Congress can support veterans.

Brent Thelen, the health care system director of the St. Cloud VA Health Care System, told reporters that he and Emmer discussed the progress made by the hospital, as well as the challenges their system faces after the COVID-19 pandemic and recent inflation.

“Anything he can do for us is great,” Thelen said. “Better for the veteran.”

Emmer said they discussed ideas for opening workforce opportunities, specifically for people who live locally. Thelen said the St. Cloud VA Medical Center will host a job fair on July 15.

Emmer said they also spoke about "opening up opportunities for people younger than 18” to work for the VA hospital system to tackle the labor shortage.

“It’s such a great place to work; it’s a great mission, taking care of those who protected our freedoms and took care of us,” Emmer said.
