Congressman Cohen Urges Colleagues to Address Violent Crime

December 8, 2021

At Judiciary Committee markup, says “we need to do more to support our police”

WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, today urged Committee colleagues to address violent felonies and support community policing. The remarks came during the markup of the Homicide Victims Families Rights Act.

In his remarks, Congressman Cohen said in part:

"America is suffering from many, many, many homicides, many violent felonies, and we need to do more to support our police, to give them the opportunity to go back and look at cold cases and find people who committed these crimes and see that justice is served. In Memphis, we just had a killing – we have them every second or third day, or every day sometimes – at a service station where a 16- and a 15-year-old girl were killed by a drive-by shooter and another 15-year-old girl hospitalized and a baby hospitalized. We have shocking stories like this every day.

"We need more community policing in cities with high crime, high violent crime, and we need more support for them."
