Congressmen Cohen and Cleaver Release a Statement after Sentencing of Missouri Man in Threats Case

November 16, 2021

Say there is “too much vitriol being hurled” at lawmakers

WASHINGTON – Congressmen Steve Cohen (TN-09) and Emanuel Cleaver (MO-05) were informed of today's sentencing in U.S. District Court in Springfield, Missouri, of Kenneth R. Hubert on federal charges that he threatened them. They released the following statement:

"This unfortunate case demonstrates that there is too much vitriol being hurled at and, unfortunately, by lawmakers who should know better. This sentence should act as a deterrent to those who might be inclined to take policy and political differences out of the realm of civility and threaten violence—which can never become the norm in a functioning democracy."

Mr. Hubert pleaded guilty in June to threatening to assault the Congressmen.
