Congressman Cohen Secures Recommendations for an Additional $22.5 Million in Funding for Community Projects

Appropriations subcommittees support 13 projects including pediatric intensive care vehicles, Memphis Zoo parking

MEMPHIS – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today announced that 13 more of his Community Projects totaling $22,595,000 have received the green light from two more Appropriations subcommittees. On Thursday, he announced two projects totaling $1,173,332 have received Appropriations subcommittee recommendations. All of his projects have been recommended for funding.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"If these projects now made part of this year's Appropriations bill become law, the 9th Congressional District will receive $23.7 million -- more than twice as much Community Projects funding as I was able to secure last year, which was a record $11.7 million. These investments will transform our community."

The Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies recommended funding for these projects:

  • $1,150,000 for the Soulsville Foundation
  • $970,000 for Le Bonheur Pediatric Intensive Care Transport Vehicles
  • $2 million for Memphis's Regional One Health Medication Management Equipment and enhancements to the Women's Facility
  • $1 million to expand the YMCA Before and After School Care Program in Memphis-Shelby County Schools.
  • $1 million for the Memphis Competitive Edge Program

The Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development and Related Agencies recommended funding for these projects:

  • $3,000,000 for the redevelopment of the Porter Jr. Hi. – MLK Transportation Academy
  • $1,275,000 for Hospitality Hub Studio Village
  • $750,000 for South City VI, supporting the final phase of the redevelopment of the Foote Park at South City Community Homes
  • $2,000,000 for the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) Memphis
  • $1,250,000 for the Collins Chapel/Room in the Inn
  • $1,200,000 for the United Housing, Inc. (UHI) Promoting and Preserving Homeownership Program
  • $3,000,000 for Overton Park – Memphis Zoo Parking Solution Initiative – $1 million more than Congressman Cohen requested
  • $4 million for the Cobblestone landing project
