Rep. Williams Introduces Bill to Make “Remain in Mexico” Policy Permanent

April 20, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Roger Williams (TX-25) alongside Congressman Carlos Gimenez (FL-28) introduced H.R. 2738, Make the Migrant Protection Protocols Mandatory Act, the House companion bill to Senator Blackburn's bill, that would make President Trump's "Remain in Mexico" policy permanent.

"President Biden's first action upon taking office was to reverse President Trump's successful ‘Remain in Mexico' policy," said Congressman Williams. "It should be no surprise that Biden, who campaigned on open borders and free healthcare for illegal migrants, would take action to make it easier for illegal immigrants to exploit the asylum process and break our nation's laws. In doing so, he single handedly created the worst humanitarian and national security crisis at our southern border in American history. Since October 2022, total encounters at our southern border have exceeded 1 million, and only 32% were deported, leaving over 700,000 illegal immigrants to be held or released in the US pending their court date hearing. While President Biden and his ever-elusive ‘Border Czar' Kamala Harris try to bury the truth, Republicans are taking action to secure the border and expose Democrats for their failure to enforce the rule of law and keep Americans safe. I'm proud to work alongside my friend, Senator Marsha Blackburn to advance this important legislation that appropriately responds to the disaster Joe Biden created."

Congressman Carlos Gimenez on H.R. 2738:

“As an exile who fled Communist Cuba, I understand first-hand how important it is to have a safe, orderly, and secure immigration process,” said Congressman Carlos Gimenez (FL-28). “What we have at our Southern Border is total chaos with a record number of migrant encounters attempting to enter the United States illegally. The ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy was effective in curbing illegal immigration and it is absurd that President Biden would refuse to enforce a proven policy at time when our Border Patrol agents are overwhelmed. I am proud to join my colleague Rep. Roger Williams in introducing this legislation to codify the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy into U.S. law.”

Senator Marsha Blackburn:

"President Biden's failed immigration policies have created a crisis at our southern border," said Senator Blackburn." Law enforcement have reported more than 5.7 million encounters with illegal aliens at our southern border since Biden was sworn into office. Biden terminated President Trump's successful policy that forced migrants to remain in Mexico while seeking asylum. My legislation will stop Biden's decision to catch and release migrants into our communities and reinstate the successful Remain in Mexico program."
