Rep. Good Wants to Improve Access to Veteran Benefit Programs

November 8, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Bob Good (R-VA) has introduced the Veterans Education is Timeless Act of 2023 to update eligibility dates for six Veterans and Survivors Education programs to enable veterans and their dependents to use these educational benefits regardless of age or timing.

“Our veterans and their families have made tremendous sacrifices for our country, and they deserve to have access to the educational benefits promised to them, no matter when they choose to use them,” said Congressman Good. “These programs ease the transition to civilian life by providing vital educational assistance to veterans and their families and help them achieve their career and educational goals.”

Currently, most veterans education benefits have a
10- or 15-year delimiting date, meaning that after the deadline for the benefit passes, the veteran is no longer able to use the benefits. For dependents, there is either a year or age limit. These arbitrary deadlines should not prevent someone from receiving a promised benefit.

Programs included in this bill:

  • Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program (DEA)
  • Montgomery GI Bill—Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR)
  • Montgomery GI Bill—Active Duty (MGIB-AD)
  • Post-Vietnam Era Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP)
  • Post-9/11 GI Bill
  • Fry Scholarship
