Starting as early as Feb. 9, CVS Health will begin offering appointments for COVID-19 vaccines to eligible populations at 36 CVS pharmacy locations in Virginia. Vaccinations will begin Feb. 11 as part of the first phase of the federal retail pharmacy program.

For the initial rollout, CVS Health plans to administer up to 26,000 total doses across Virginia, which will be sourced from the federal pharmacy partnership program. CVS will expand to more locations and offer additional appointments, subject to product availability. Currently, COVID-19 vaccinations are only available at select participating CVS Pharmacy locations and appointments are required.

The announcement is part of an 11-state rollout across approximately 335 CVS pharmacy locations, said CVS Health.

Vaccine rollout:

  • Eligibility is based on state criteria which will be confirmed and communicated by each state
  • Patients must register in advance at CVS.com or through the CVS Pharmacy app, and people without online access can contact CVS customer service.
  • Walk-in vaccinations without an appointment will not be provided.
  • Vaccines at participating CVS Pharmacy locations in Virginia will be available to individuals who meet the state’s criteria.

Even with some of the highest social vulnerability scores in the state, Staunton, Augusta County and Waynesboro didn't make the list, yet.

The Centers for Disease Control created a Social Vulnerability Index using 15 social factors (poverty, lack of access to transportation, housing) to rank census tracts on their social vulnerability. Communities with a higher social vulnerability may have a weakened ability to prevent human suffering and financial loss in an epidemic, according to the CDC.

Vaccines will eventually be available at CVS Pharmacy locations throughout the country subject to product availability, with the capacity to administer 20–25 million shots per month, said CVS Health.

CVS Health continues to make progress in its effort to vaccinate residents and staff at more than 870 long-term care facilities across Virginia. First doses at all facilities in the state that selected CVS Health to provide COVID-19 vaccinations will be complete by mid-February with second doses well underway, said CVS Health.
