McEachin and Wexton Statement on Commission’s Recommendation of Barbara Johns to Replace Robert E. Lee Statue in U.S. Capitol

In response to today’s announcement from the Virginia Commission For Historical Statues In The United States Capitol recommending Barbara Johns to replace Robert E. Lee as one of Virginia’s two statues in the U.S. Capitol, Representatives Donald McEachin (D-VA) and Jennifer Wexton (D-VA) released the following statement:

"Virginia deserves to be represented in the U.S. Capitol by a figure who embodies the values of our Commonwealth, and we believe there is no better choice than Barbara Johns.

“As the leaders of the effort in the House of Representatives to replace Virginia’s Robert E. Lee statue, we applaud the Committee for their hard work and deliberation. We wholeheartedly support their recommendation of Barbara Johns.

"Barbara Johns changed the hearts and minds of people across the country when she stood up against segregation in Virginia's schools. The bravery she displayed at a young age will continue to serve as an inspiration to all those who visit the Capitol."
