Instructions

I am pleased to invite high school students to participate in the 41th Annual Congressional Art CompetitionThis year’s theme is: A day in the life of Wisconsin. This nationwide art competition is open to high school students only, however exceptions may be made for schools that have 7th through 12th grades on one campus. It is sponsored by Members of Congress through competitions held in their congressional districts and allows students the opportunity to showcase their talents. The winning student from Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District will have their piece hung in the U.S. Capitol Building for one year. Details on a reception are still pending. Other winners of the competition will be displayed in my District Congressional Office, as well as in my Washington D.C. Office.

The current guidelines for the competition are:

  • Piece must be two dimensional and be no larger than 26 inches wide by 26 inches tall by 4 inches thick, including frame
  • It may not weigh more than 15 pounds
  • Accepted Mediums:
    • Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.
    • Drawings: colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, charcoal (it is recommended that charcoal and pastel drawings be fixed)
    • Collages: must be two dimensional
    • Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints
    • Mixed Media: use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.
    • Computer-generated art.
    • Photographs
  • Each entry must be original in concept, design, and execution and may not violate U.S. copyright laws. Any entry that has been copied from an existing photo or image (including a painting, graphic, or advertisement), that was created by someone other than the student is a violation of the competition rules and will not be accepted.
  • The piece should be “gallery ready” including some sort of sturdy mat or frame and a device for hanging on the back of the piece so it can be displayed. (Hooks, tabs, or wires)
  • This year’s theme is: A day in the life of Wisconsin. Entries need to demonstrate a Wisconsin theme.
