What are you thankful for?

It’s a simple question that evokes a range of responses from those asked. These answers remind us—even in the most challenging of times—of the many blessings in our lives, both big and small.

In the declaration of America’s first National Day of Thanksgiving by President George Washington, he proclaimed, “Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor—and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me ‘to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.’”

It is a message which reflects what this holiday season is really about.

I am grateful to be an American and live in our exceptional country.

I am grateful to the brave women and men of the United States Armed Forces, our veterans, and the generations of those who have worn the uniform and sacrificed to protect our way of life. Their service has steadfastly defended "Our inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

I am grateful to be an Arkansan and serve the great people of the Third District and state. It’s an honor to wake up each day and work on your behalf.

I am grateful for the goodness of all our neighbors who are always willing to support one another and help those in need, especially our essential workers across industries—medical professionals, first responders, law enforcement officers, teachers, grocery workers, small businesses, truckers, and more. You are foundational to our communities.

When we gather around the table, may we celebrate with a deeper appreciation, may our challenges be overcome with fidelity to prayer, may our differences be met with understanding, may our doubts be overtaken with a higher sense of purpose, and may health and prosperity fill our homes.

Let us appreciate what we have, cherish our families and loved ones, remember the blessings bestowed upon us, and pray for those around us. And as a measure of our thanks, let us renew our commitment to giving back to our communities and dedication to preserving this great land of liberty.

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life, and I hope that spirit is with you and your family today.

Happy Thanksgiving!
