FSGG Chairman
I was appointed Chairman of the FSGG Subcommittee on the powerful House Appropriations Committee this week.
I’m very proud to announce that I have been appointed to serve as the Chairman of the Financial Services and General Government (FSGG) Subcommittee on the powerful House Appropriations Committee. This means I will be the lead Republican wielding a gavel and providing oversight and approval over annual spending levels for a diverse number of agencies and programs. I will help control the budgets of key agencies and departments. With influence over hundreds of billions of dollars within my purview, I will also be charged with holding hearings with department heads and scrutinizing agency budgets.
These include the Internal Revenue Service, Department of the Treasury, District of Columbia, Judiciary, Executive Office of the President, Securities and Exchange Commission, Small Business Administration, Federal Trade Commission, Federal Election Commission, Federal Communications Commission, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Consumer Product Safety Commission, Office of Personnel Management, and the U.S. Postal Service.
It's a wide swath of agencies, and I am ready for the task at hand. The Chairman position of the Subcommittee is also known as a “Cardinal.” The nickname likens the roles to the most senior members of the Catholic Church because of the power one has in determining the direction, the resources, and the guidance that are in the bills for the agencies they each oversee.
It’s an honor to be named the leader of such a pivotal part of the Appropriations Committee. The authority of the Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee impacts every single American and our financial system. There is great work to be done. Guiding critical funding priorities and charting a responsible fiscal path forward will direct my leadership. I thank Chairwoman Granger for her confidence as we move forward in fulfilling our fiscal commitments. I also appreciate her trust and kind words of support:
“Congressman Womack’s expertise in budgetary and appropriations issues make him stand out among his colleagues. His principled leadership and sensibility in addressing complex funding situations are exactly why he was chosen to lead in this position. With a focus on fiscal responsibility and proper order, I know Steve will safeguard hard-earned tax dollars. He will continue to serve America and Arkansas well.”- Appropriations Chairwoman Kay Granger
There is no doubt that there are challenges ahead. The debt ceiling is certainly one of them. With the realities of a divided government and keen understanding of political dynamics, I will be working with my counterparts to responsibly fulfill our funding duties. We must govern in reality, while also concentrating on advancing our Commitment to America, passing strong appropriations, and holding the Biden Administration accountable. It’s a privilege to serve Arkansas and America in this capacity.
In addition to my Cardinal appointment, I will also have duties on other subcommittees. I will update you on those seats as soon as they are announced.
