January 30, 2026

Welcome to my weekly newsletter, From the Front, where I provide a quick update on what I've been working on in Washington, D.C., and back home in Arkansas's Third Congressional District.

TOP OF MIND

This week, I gathered with family, loved ones, friends, and many others to remember, honor, and celebrate the life of my wife of 41 years, Terri Lynn Womack.

I was blessed to marry an extraordinary woman. She enriched our lives in countless ways, and now she rests eternally in Heaven with our Lord and Savior.

I am grateful to everyone who traveled to Northwest Arkansas to honor Terri despite the snow, sleet, and ice—especially Steve Amerson, who led us in worship and song, and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who spoke at the service. Also present were my friends and colleagues, House Appropriations Chairman Tom Cole, Congressman Kevin Hern, and Congressman Mark Alford.

Thank you for extending your condolences and offering your support to me and my family during this difficult time. May God bless your lives as He has blessed ours.

A slideshow of memories from Terri’s life, set to Steve Amerson’s It Took Her Breath Away, can be viewed HERE.

APPROPRIATIONS UPDATE

The Senate ran into trouble this week passing the remaining six Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 appropriations bills due to fallout over the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis this past weekend. I support a full, fair, transparent, and comprehensive investigation into that incident.

Senators outraged by the shooting and by the administration’s immigration‑enforcement policies refused to pass the House‑approved appropriations bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

However, the House’s procedural rule governing consideration of these bills knit together the remaining six appropriations bills and sent them to the Senate as a single package. As a result, any change to the DHS funding bill—even simply removing it—forces the entire package back to the House for a vote.

The government funding deadline is today, January 30. It also appears that House leadership will not call members back to Washington this weekend due to attendance concerns. This means there will be a partial government shutdown over the weekend before the House returns to consider the Senate’s changes to the package.

Government shutdowns are never the desired outcome. Congress must work swiftly to pass the remaining FY 2026 appropriations bills and deliver for the American people.

HAPPENING IN THE DISTRICT

This morning, I attended a breakfast celebrating Kent Eikenberry’s retirement as President of the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank. Kent has dedicated many years of service to our community and stands as a true example of someone who is a source of good. Congratulations on a well‑deserved retirement, Kent.
