The Week in Review

Happy Monday!

I hope you had a wonderful weekend. I am grateful to serve you all in the 119th Congress. Read below to see what I’ve been working on.

TOMORROW: Tax Filing and
Preparation Assistance

Tomorrow, Tuesday, February 17, my office will be hosting a tax filing and preparation assistance event. The event will be held from 10am to 1pm at Arizona State University’s Polytechnic Campus in Mesa:

     ASU Polytechnic Campus
     Cooley Ballroom
     7001 E Williams Field Rd
     Mesa, AZ 85212

Representatives from the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) will be on-site to assist you. For those who would like to have their return prepared on site, please be sure to bring the following:

  • Your Social Security card, a picture of the card, or an official government document that has your SSN on it (like your Social Security statement). Prior year tax returns are not accepted to verify your SSN.
  • An official photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport.
  • All tax documents you received—W2s, 1099s, etc.
  • A copy of your last year’s tax return if you have it (not mandatory).

There are some situations in which returns cannot be processed on-site. For example:

  • Your income is above $69,000.
  • You are Married Filing Separately.
  • You bought or sold digital assets (like Bitcoin).
  • You have rental property.
This list is not exhaustive, and there are other, less common examples. For a full list of exceptions, please click here.

Celebrating Arizona Statehood Day

I couldn't imagine living in any state other than Arizona. Our state's beauty and people are unmatched in the nation, and its future shines as bright as it did 114 years ago. We are truly blessed to call the Grand Canyon State our home.

Happy Statehood Day, Arizona!

Chairing a Judiciary Subcommittee
Field Hearing on the Federal Monitoring of
Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office

I chaired a House Judiciary subcommittee hearing in Phoenix titled “The Monitoring Racket: The Grift that Keeps on Giving.” During the hearing, my colleagues and I sought answers for the continued federal oversight of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), which has cost taxpayers roughly $350 million.

In 2013, a federal court placed MCSO under a court-ordered monitor to oversee policing reforms. Since then, four sheriffs have implemented policy changes, training, and reporting requirements to meet federal standards. For five years, MCSO has met every requirement. Despite the near-perfect compliance, the federal monitoring continues, which prohibits elected sheriffs from properly doing their jobs and places a hefty burden on the taxpayer.

In January 2026, the Department of Justice filed a court brief confirming that MCSO has corrected its unconstitutional practices and demonstrated sustained, systemic compliance across training, procedures, and policy. However, the federal monitor has shown no signs of backing off.

It is past time for action and correction. Local officials elected by the people and not an unaccountable monitor should run the Sheriff’s Office. Click the image below to hear my opening statement from the hearing:

Holding Federal Agencies Accountable to Taxpayers

I reintroduced the bipartisan Audit the Pentagon Act–alongside Congressman Mark Pocan (D-WI)–to increase transparency and enforce fiscal accountability at the Department of Defense (DOD). As of December 2025, the Pentagon has failed its eighth consecutive audit. According to a recent GAO report, the DOD continues to be unable to account for billions of dollars' worth of assets.

Under the Audit the Pentagon Act, the DOD’s budget is reduced by 0.5% for failure to pass a clean, independent audit in the year following the legislation’s adoption. The reduction increases to 1.0% for subsequent failures.

For years, the Pentagon has failed audit after audit while Congress continues to write blank checks. That’s unacceptable. The American people demand accountability for every taxpayer dollar—especially when we’re spending more than $1 trillion on our defense annually, and we’re facing a $38 trillion national debt. The Audit the Pentagon Act imposes tangible consequences for bureaucratic failure. A strong national defense demands both readiness and fiscal responsibility. The era of endless excuses must end.

“For a department that gets more than $1 trillion a year, it’s essential that they be able to pass a financial audit,” said Congressman Pocan. “After eight consecutive failed audits, the Defense Department remains the only federal agency to have never passed an audit. The Audit the Pentagon Act will create a powerful incentive for the Department to get its fiscal house in order, or otherwise face funding reductions. The Pentagon has a history of little accountability while pouring billions into weapons systems that just don't work properly, and it’s past time they be held accountable for this irresponsible stewardship of taxpayer funds.”

House Passes Legislation to
Protect American Elections

The House of Representatives passed the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility Act, or the SAVE America Act, legislation to strengthen election integrity and ensure that only American citizens are able to vote in American elections.

The right to vote in American elections is sacred and reserved solely for American citizens. The SAVE America Act takes straightforward, commonsense steps to ensure that our elections are secure. Only in Congress is requiring proof of citizenship and photo ID to vote controversial. The vast majority of Americans—95% of Republicans and 71% of Democrats—support these measures.

Americans present identification to drive a car, board a plane, check into a hotel, and even purchase certain over-the-counter cough medications. The rule of law does not stop at the ballot box. Every American citizen demands the assurance that their vote will not be cancelled out by an unlawfully-cast ballot.

A nation that cannot protect its ballot cannot protect its sovereignty, and I’m thankful to see this crucial legislation pass the House. The Senate must act swiftly and use every mechanism available—instead of allowing it to collect dust for 300+ days—to advance the SAVE America Act to President Trump’s desk. The federal government must act now to safeguard our elections and our Republic.

Epstein Associate Ghislaine Maxwell
Refuses to Answer Questions from the
House Oversight Committee

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee deposed Ghislaine Maxwell in the Jeffrey Epstein probe. Maxwell, one of Epstein’s closest confidants, refused to answer every single question and invoked the Fifth Amendment multiple times.

  • "Were you a close friend and confidant of Jeffrey Epstein?" FIFTH!
  • "Did you, at any time, play any role in Jeffrey Epstein's activities involving the recruitment, grooming, or trafficking of young women or girls?" FIFTH!
  • "Have you ever coerced, directed, or otherwise instructed any young woman or girl to provide sexual favors to Mr. Epstein or any other individual?" FIFTH!
  • "Did you and Jeffrey Epstein attempt to surround yourselves with influential individuals to curry favor and shield yourselves from potential scrutiny?" FIFTH!
  • "Can you please provide us with all the names of other additional co-conspirators to the crimes perpetuated by you and Jeffrey Epstein?" FIFTH!

House Judiciary Committee Hears Testimony from Attorney General Pam Bondi

The House Judiciary Committee held a hearing titled “Oversight of the U.S. Department of Justice.” U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi shared with the committee her department’s priorities and commitment to enforcing federal law. I pressed AG Bondi on constitutional safeguards—especially regarding the federal government’s pattern of warrantless searches of U.S. persons’ communications under Section 702 of the Federal Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).
