The Week in Review

Happy Friday!

I hope you had a wonderful week. I am grateful to serve you all in the 119th Congress. Read below to see what I’ve been working on this week.

Tax Filing and Preparation Assistance Event Recap

My office led a tax filing and preparation assistance event in Mesa. The event featured on-site tax preparation from Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), and representatives from my office were on hand for casework assistance.

I thank VITA for their important guidance and those in the community who stopped by for our event.

If my office can be helpful with IRS issues or other federal agencies, please don’t hesitate to reach out! You can reach my Mesa office at 480-699-8239.

Praising the VA's Action to Restore Veterans' Second Amendment Rights

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)—under the direction of Secretary Doug Collins and President Donald Trump—announced a major step to restore and protect the Second Amendment rights of America’s veterans.

For nearly three decades, veterans enrolled in the VA’s Fiduciary Program were reported to the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) as “prohibited persons” without a judicial determination that they posed a danger to themselves or others. Following a review in consultation with the Department of Justice (DOJ), the VA determined that this practice violated both federal law and veterans’ constitutional rights. Effective immediately, the VA has ended this reporting and is working with the FBI to remove prior improper entries.

For too long, unelected bureaucrats treated financial assistance as justification to strip our veterans of their constitutional rights. Needing help managing benefits is certainly not grounds to erase the Second Amendment. Our veterans defended the Constitution abroad. They should not have to fight their own government at home to reclaim the rights they swore to protect. This long-overdue decision restores due process and corrects a serious injustice inflicted on thousands of those who served.

I have been a leader in this space throughout my time in Congress. I’ve cosponsored H.R. 2184, the Firearm Due Process Protection Act of 2025, legislation to restore due-process for law-abiding American citizens who are wrongfully denied the right to buy a firearm by NICS. Constitutional rights cannot be suspended by administrative shortcuts. We must ensure that no agency ever again circumvents due process at the expense of the men and women who defended our freedoms.

Commending the Appointment of Dr. Jay Bhattacharya as Acting CDC Director

Dr. Jay Bhattacharya was appointed to serve as Acting Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in addition to his current role as Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Dr. Bhattacharya is a proven leader who understands that public health policy must be guided by sound science, individual liberties, and accountability to the American people. His work at NIH has demonstrated a results-driven approach, and I’m confident he’ll bring the same focus and integrity to the CDC. I congratulate Dr. Bhattacharya on this appointment and look forward to seeing him strengthen CDC’s mission to protect all Americans’ health while preserving freedom.
