Protecting Victims

This week, the U.S. House unanimously passed H.R. 8481, Kayleigh’s Law, by voice vote. The legislation, introduced by Congressman Abe Hamadeh (AZ-08), requires federal courts to issue permanent no-contact orders prohibiting certain convicted violent and sex offenders from contacting their victims if requested by the victim. I was an original cosponsor of the bill.

Kayleigh’s Law was inspired by the experience of sexual abuse survivor Kayleigh Kozak, who learned her abuser was seeking to terminate his lifetime probation. Kayleigh’s courage cannot be understated. I am grateful to former State Senator Sine Kerr for successfully leading this effort in the Arizona Legislature, making Arizona the first state in the nation to implement this policy, and to Congressman Abe Hamadeh for bringing it to the federal level.

Removing Politics from SCOTUS

This week, the U.S. House of Representatives failed to pass H.J. Res. 1, my proposed constitutional amendment to permanently establish the Supreme Court of the United States at nine justices.

The reality is that when Democrats are unable to convince the American people of the validity of their own policies and capture the Presidency and majority in both chambers, they demand to change the rules of the game. Just look at the extreme ideas of the socialists being elected to Congress, calling for the transformation of the Court into one elected and subordinate to the legislature. It is a blessing and a miracle that our great nation celebrated 250 years of self-government. But allowing the Democrats to pack the Court is sure fire way to change the fundamental nature of our Republic and quickly devolve to the socialist dystopia they so badly desire.

Combatting Child Exploitation  

It’s been over 225 days since the House passed my CSAFE Act to deliver long-overdue legal clarity and serious consequences for criminals who coerce and exploit children. Unfortunately, the Senate has not yet considered this critically vital bill.

Last week, I called on Senators Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego to join my efforts to protect our children and champion this meaningful policy to the finish line in their chamber. Passage of this bill would close gaps in federal law that allow predators to hide behind screens, anonymity, and outdated statutes while young lives are shattered. It’s time for action.

Expanding Educational Freedom

I recently joined U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon in the East Valley to highlight the Education Freedom Tax Credit, which I helped pass last year. The program gives taxpayers greater control over how their dollars support educational opportunities while expanding choices for students and families. Scholarship funds can help K-12 students cover many educational expenses, including tuition, tutoring, technology, special education services, and therapies.

States must opt into the program for students to receive scholarships funded through the tax credit. To date, thirty states—including some led by Democrat governors—have opted into the program. If a state declines to participate, its taxpayers may still claim the federal tax credit, but their contributions will benefit eligible students in participating states rather than students in their own state. Unfortunately, Arizona’s Governor has not opted into the program, denying our families its full benefits. We called on Governor Hobbs to join the thirty states that have already opted in and give Arizona families access to the Education Freedom Tax Credit.

Escalating America’s Debt

Last month, the United States government surpassed $40 trillion in debt, doubling its financial burden over the past decade.

For decades, Members of Congress have shown catastrophic unseriousness about reining in spending and leaving a better future for the next generation. Regardless of which party controls Congress, I have sounded the alarm on this fiscal cliff since I entered the U.S. House and have introduced legislation to help solve this crisis. Our children and grandchildren will be forced to suffer the immense consequences of this inaction and fear of making tough decisions. No one should be surprised when that time arrives for our great nation.

Meetings and District Events

My office’s Veterans Affairs liaison attended meetings this week with Veterans Affinity and RED Friday Patriots. Attendees heard from guest speakers Commander Lynn Burnett and John Mullan, a three-time Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient.
