District Update |March 15, 2021

Dear Friend,

I hope you and your loved ones are staying well. I wanted to provide you with an update on my work I am doing in Washington, D.C. for AZ-06. Whether it be economic, healthcare, or border policy, I am continuing to fight for a strong and secure America. Right now, we are seeing the impact weak border policies have, as Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have encountered over 100,000 individuals crossing the border without legal status just in February 2021.

This increase is nearly triple the amount we saw in February 2019. I am continuing to monitor the current border crisis, and will work with my colleagues to ensure the necessary resources are available to support our border patrol agents working to keep our communities safe. Please continue reading below for my recent votes, floor speech, and some local events I've attended.

Protecting Our Second Amendment Rights

Image

Last week, my Democratic colleagues passed their legislation to restrict our Second Amendment rights, and criminalize the private transfer of firearms. I voted against this bill because of the extreme restrictions this places on law-abiding citizens and our Second Amendment rights. It is critical that Congress works on bipartisan legislation that will keep our communities safe, without taking Americans' rights away.

There are already federal laws in place to prohibit unlawful transfers of firearms, H.R. 8 will only restrict Second Amendment rights and intrude on individuals' right to privacy. I will continue working to uphold the Constitution for Arizonans.

We Must Control Our Spending

Image

I gave a speech on the House Floor to discuss my Democratic colleagues' spending bill, and explain recent remarks I’ve heard trying to compare this legislation and the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA).

When Republicans passed the TCJA, our focus was on reducing taxes, increasing wages, and growing the economy. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, our economy was seeing incredible growth, with record-low unemployment, strong labor force participation, and incredibly positive data for income inequality. My Democratic colleagues' $1.9 trillion spending package is a one-time patch for hard-working Americans. This bill will increase our interest rates, and crush hard-working Americans' economic futures.

We must learn from the positive impact pro-growth policies have had for our brothers and sisters looking to grow their wages or simply safely return to work. Watch me discuss the common misconceptions being circulated by clicking the image above.

New Vaccine Eligibility

This week, Arizona received its first shipment of the Johnson and Johnson (Janssen) single-shot COVID-19 vaccine. The Maricopa County Department of Public Health released the following list of eligibility based on essential frontline workers to receive this vaccine.

In addition to this new list, the Phoenix Veteran’s Administration announced that they have opened their COVID-19 vaccine appointments to Veterans enrolled at the VA for all ages. Veterans are encouraged to receive their COVID-19 vaccine at any of the four VA locations, and to call the scheduling line at 602-604-3915

WWII Service Recognition Ceremony

Image

I had the pleasure on Sunday to meet with the valiant World War II veterans here in our local Fountain Hills community. The ceremony was intended to recognize "the greatest generation," one of bravery and dedication to their country. I cannot thank our veterans enough for the selfless actions they've taken to protect our country. It was an absolute honor to be present for their recognition this weekend.

I appreciate you taking the time to read my weekly e-newsletter. If our office can ever be helpful for you, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Sincerely,

David Schweikert
