Dear Friend,
I hope you are doing well. I wanted to provide a few updates on my work this past week, and share an upcoming internship opportunity for students in AZ-06.
My District Office is currently accepting applications for our 2021 Summer Congressional Internship Program in Arizona. The deadline for students to apply is April 30th. If you know a student interested in applying, please visit my website!
I also wanted to share a photo from this weekend’s annual hike in the Grand Canyon. I always enjoy hiking and spending the night in one of the natural wonders of the world.
Telehealth Roundtable
Last week, I hosted a virtual telehealth roundtable following the one year anniversary of my legislation to expand this technology to help patients safely connect with their providers amidst a pandemic being signed into law. Since this change, we have seen a dramatic increase in telehealth’s utilization and effectiveness among all patients.
I hosted health care professionals for a discussion about this advancement, and heard about the positive impact this expansion has had for patients. I want to thank each of our panelists for joining to share their expertise in utilizing this expansion of telehealth, and to discuss what we can be doing to provide convenient, effective, and affordable health care for all Americans. Congressional Art Competition Deadline Approaching!
The last day for students to submit artwork for the Congressional Art Competition, An Artistic Discovery, is April 26th. Students are strongly encouraged to work directly with their high school art teacher regarding the 2021 art submission rules, student release forms, and important dates and deadlines. Art submission drop off will be at the Scottsdale Artists School from 2pm-5pm by appointment only April 26th. Students or parents are welcome to contact my District Office to schedule and coordinate this drop off with their high school teacher.
This is a great opportunity to have young artists' work displayed prominently in the tunnels and walkways of the U.S. Capitol Building. If you have any further questions or concerns, please visit my website here, or contact my District Office at (480) 946-2411.
Tax Hikes Hurt the Economy
President Biden recently introduced a framework for his “American Jobs Plan,” a proposed legislative package being messaged as a plan to provide updates to infrastructure and create jobs across the country. In reality however, the President’s plan will cost American jobs, raise taxes on workers, and undo Republican efforts that led to record economic growth.
One landmark provision of the President’s “infrastructure” plan is to significantly increase the corporate tax rate, which was previously reduced to 21% by Republicans under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. This brought record economic growth, new jobs, higher wages, and increased investments to America. At a time when our nation’s businesses are still in recovery, we should be focused on ways to recreate the record-breaking economy we saw before the pandemic by working to increase our labor force, not raising taxes on our businesses and workers.
There are numerous policies that have proven to help generate economic growth that are already in place. Now we need to focus on helping communities re-open and incentivizing individuals to return to work in order to get our economy back on track.
March Border Update
Source: CBP
I wanted to share recently updated numbers from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol for March migrant encounters. As you can see above, the blue line represents the sharp increase in apprehensions this year, with over 172,000 encounters just last month.
Republicans are continuing to urge the Biden Administration to re-start border wall construction, and re-enter Asylum Cooperation Agreements (ACA) between the United States, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador to help support the dramatic increase in migrant apprehensions. You can use this link to see the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's updated March data.
I appreciate you taking time to read my weekly e-newsletter. If there are any additional services our office can provide you, please feel welcome to contact us.
Sincerely,
David Schweikert
