Floor Speech

Last week, I gave a speech on the harmful effects we are seeing from the Democrats’ policy proposals. Whether it be open border policies, rising inflation, or proposed tax increases, we are already starting to see how the Democrats’, and this Administration's, proposals and increased spending are hurting hard-working Americans.

At a time where it is more important than ever to be creating jobs, encouraging individuals to return to work, and re-opening schools, the Democrats are instead focused on incentivizing reliance on the government, resulting in individuals staying home on unemployment insurance.

I also discussed the data we saw following tax reform, and the importance of keeping pro-growth policies in place to re-create record economic growth. Under the Republican-led Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, we saw record low unemployment, wage increases for women and minorities, and record economic growth for businesses. We cannot keep paying people to stay home, we must create incentives for Americans to get back to work to help grow the labor force and economy.

April Border Numbers Continue to Increase

Image

In April, the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) encountered over 178,000 migrants attempting to illegally enter the United States. This fiscal year, CBP has already had over 749,600 encounters, almost doubling what we saw in the previous year.

The increase in encounters at the border in April shows our border is still not secured, as this Administration continues to encourage migrants to come illegally. The border crisis is continuing to impact our state and local communities, which is why I am continuing to advocate for strong border security measures including re-starting border wall construction.

Working to Strengthen the World Trade Organization

Image

I participated in a Ways and Means Committee Hearing on the Biden Administration's 2021 Trade Policy Agenda with the United States Trade Representative, Katherine Tai. During this hearing, we discussed our country's commitment to strengthen the World Trade Organization (WTO) and how to better work with other WTO members to achieve reforms at the organization.

It was a pleasure to speak with Ambassador Tai about the importance of creating these positive reforms to the WTO, and how this relationship can help further shape rules for global economies and knock down trade barriers. Last Congress, I introduced a bipartisan resolution to strengthen the WTO, and was proud to re-introduce the resolution ahead of the hearing. This will allow the United States to provide strong support for American businesses and workers as we rebuild our economy and work to return to record economic growth.

Arizona COVID Vaccine Updates

Children ages 12 to 15 are now eligible for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. Individuals interested in receiving the vaccine, or parents looking to register their child, can use the vaccine finder here to locate a site near you. Appointments are no longer required for state-run sites, but are still a great option to reduce wait times.

I appreciate you taking time to read my weekly e-newsletter. If there are any additional services our office can provide you, please feel welcome to contact us.

Sincerely,

David Schweikert
