District Update |June 28, 2021

Dear Friend,

I hope you all are staying well in this Arizona heat. I wanted to provide you with some recent updates on my work for you, and give a shoutout to the Phoenix Suns ahead of their game tonight - let's go Suns!

Letter Regarding Passport Delays

I recently sent a letter to United States Secretary of State Anthony Blinken regarding the severe backlog of passports and delays Arizonans are experiencing for future international travel. Right now, the State Department has:

  • Over 2.8 million passports backlogged in their system
  • An 18 week delay on requesting a new passport
As our communities have re-opened, and we are starting to see individuals making international travel arrangements, I have asked for the State Department to be expanding resources and staffing for U.S. passports to help ensure Americans can receive this important document in a timely manner.

If you notice your passport is reaching expiration in the next year, it is important to be prepared for delays when renewing this document. Visit the State Department's website for more information, here

Climate and Health Care Folklore

Last week, I spoke on the House Floor about the need for Congress to be focused on fact-based policy proposals. Whether it be health care, tax, trade, energy, or any other issues facing our country, it is important for Congress to be using data-driven solutions to ensure our policies can productively move our society forward into the 21st century.

During the speech, I discussed the different clean energy solutions and health care technologies we are seeing come to market that can promote growth, and push our country towards the future. To watch my full speech, click the photo above.

Expanding Earn to Learn

Image

I recently introduced the Earn to Learn Act, legislation to establish a matched savings scholarship program for low-income students to pay for their education. This legislation, modeled off Arizona's Earn to Learn program, which has nearly a decade-long track record of helping underserved and underrepresented students access and complete a college education, would grant qualifying students resources to help pay off student loan debt and establish financial literacy.

It is important that we continue thinking creatively about how to expand access for students to gain a college education. This proven program will add value to our country's labor force, and ultimately grow the economy. To learn more about the Earn to Learn Act, click here
