Dear ,

Happy New Year, the 118th Congress has officially begun! I greatly look forward to representing Arizona’s First Congressional District as I continue to serve on the House Ways and Means Committee. My number one priority remains the same: fight for policies that promote growth, opportunity, and wellness for all Arizonans.

It is an honor to continue this important work for Arizona. From my family and staff to yours, I wish you a very Happy New Year and encourage you to reach out if we can ever be of assistance.

Opening up the 118th Congress

Last week, I joined Jim Sharpe and Jayme West on Arizona's Morning News to discuss the Speaker's race as it unfolded in real time. Early Saturday morning, I had the distinct privilege of voting to elect Kevin McCarthy as the 55th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and ensure the work of the People’s House can begin uninterrupted. I look forward to working with Speaker McCarthy and our House Majority to deliver effective results for the people of Arizona’s First Congressional District.

House Republicans got a number of conservative wins in the rules package to be considered on the House Floor this evening, which will ultimately determine the standing rules that govern the House during the 118th Congress. The new Republican Majority’s rules will:

  • End the use of proxy voting and remote committee proceedings.
  • Allow at least 72 hours after the release of a bill before a final vote is taken.
  • Reimpose a three-fifths supermajority to approve tax rate increases.
  • Reestablish the CUTGO rule requiring mandatory spending increases be offset by corresponding spending cuts in the federal budget.
  • Eliminate the Gephardt rule, which will prevent the House from automatically increasing the debt ceiling upon passage of a budget resolution.
  • Require the Congressional Budget Office to provide analysis on the inflationary impact of legislation.

If so, please take a moment to highlight them by requesting a Certificate of Congressional Recognition from Arizona’s First Congressional District.

There are so many amazing businesses and volunteers who have gone above and beyond these last few months for our AZ-01 community. I want to recognize these individuals for their selfless actions and their daily deeds to improve our communities.

What I'm Reading & Why it Matters

Image

I recently read this Wall Street Journal story outlining the innovative ways that scammers are using robocalls -- and how to defend yourself from them. According to the FTC, 24% of adults over the age of 60 who have lost money to scams reported that it started with a phone call. Additionally, adults 70 and older reported much higher median individual losses. This article proposes a variety of ways that you can help defend yourself from spam calls and avoid financial losses.

To read more data about the victims of scam calls, click here. I am interested in the emerging technological advancements that will help fight these spam calls, and hope that this soon becomes an issue of the past.

I am greatly appreciative of the time you take out of your day to read my newsletter as well as provide thorough feedback. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

Sincerely,
