I hope you and your family are doing well. I wanted to provide a few updates on my work this past week for the residents of Arizona's First Congressional District.

Unsustainable Deficit Spending Risks Repeat of 2011 Fiscal Mistakes

In my speech on the House Floor last week, I warned my Democratic colleagues that simply raising the debt ceiling without curbing unsustainable deficit spending would signal to debt markets that the United States doesn't take its debts seriously, risking a repeat of the 2011 U.S. credit downgrading. I also rebuffed President Biden's claims that Republican Members of Congress are considering cutting Social Security and Medicare. We need to work together to protect and preserve these programs for all Americans. 

Additionally, I explained that we can lower prescription drug costs by encouraging competition in the pharmaceutical industry instead of subsidizing the industry.

On Tuesday, I questioned U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra regarding the Biden administration's plans to embrace innovation that will help prevent and end the misery of diabetes. We have to be much more forward-thinking in our approach to stabilize the pre-diabetic population. The impact it would have on our economy and future debt is remarkable.

2023 Congressional Art Competition Reminder

The 2023 Congressional Art Competition, An Artistic Discovery, is approaching! Any high school students interested in participating must submit their framed artwork with the completed student release forms on Friday, April 21, between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the Scottsdale Artists’ School, located at 3720 North Marshall Way, Scottsdale, AZ 85251.

What I’m Reading & Why It Matters

This week, I'm reading the Social Security Administration's 2023 Trustees Report, which projects that the combined Social Security Trust Funds will become exhausted by 2034 — one year sooner than last year's report. Every day we inch closer to the Trust Fund running out, we risk the doubling of senior poverty.

It's our moral obligation to protect and preserve Social Security and Medicare for future generations. I urge President Biden and Congressional Democrats to work with Republicans on bipartisan solutions that save entitlement programs and ensure seniors receive their full retirement benefits when they come due because every day we wait, the math gets more difficult.
