Dear ,
I hope you enjoyed a happy Mother's Day weekend with loved ones as we celebrated all of the mothers and motherly figures in our lives. Last week was especially busy in Washington, D.C. with Congress back in session. I wanted to provide a few updates on my work for the residents of Arizona’s First Congressional District.
Congress Must Exercise Fiscal Restraint and Responsibly Raise Debt Ceiling, Border Security Survey Inside
Click here or on the image above to watch the floor speech.
In my speech on the House Floor last week, I called out Democrats for their duplicity as they refuse to seriously negotiate with House Republicans on the debt ceiling despite demanding billions in spending in exchange for lifting the borrowing cap in 2017 and 2019 under the last administration. I also noted that Republicans have exercised fiscal restraint and showed a willingness to save the country from default. Our current fiscal trajectory is unsustainable. We have to stop playing politics with our nation's fiscal health.
Confronting the Biden Administration's Disastrous Border Policies
I strongly disagree with the Biden administration's decision to end Title 42 last Thursday. Our southern border has been overwhelmed with migrant crossings in recent months, and ending this policy only ensures the crisis will continue to worsen. Already, we're hearing stories from other states of homeless veterans being kicked out of hotels to make room for migrants.
Since March 2020, there have been 1.2 million migrant encounters at Arizona's southern border, and the Title 42 policy helped prevent our country's drug and crime epidemics from becoming much worse. I continue to hear from our local officials, stakeholders, and Border Patrol agents who are on the ground every day working hard to secure our southern border, and I remain committed to providing them with the resources they desperately need. That's why I voted last week to bolster border security and strengthen our nation's immigration policies.
Military Service Academy Applications Now Open
The online academy application portal for my office is now open to eligible high school students residing in Arizona's First Congressional District who are interested in attending one of our nation's premier military service academies. To learn more about the congressional nomination process and how to submit an application, please review the application form here. I wish prospective students the best of luck and sincerely appreciate their interest in serving our country.
What I’m Reading & Why It Matters
This week, I'm reading several articles related to the ongoing debt limit negotiations, gene therapy and genetically-altered stem cells to treat Alzheimer's disease and diabetes patients, and investments in artificial intelligence to shave years off the drug development process. As the medical world embraces new technologies to treat diseases we once assumed were incurable, I'm confident we can have a revolution in the cost of health care and make treatment affordable for hardworking Americans.
Thank you for taking the time to read this update on my latest work in Washington, D.C. and Arizona’s First Congressional District! If you have any comments or concerns, I encourage you to reach out to my office.
Sincerely,
David Schweikert |
