I hope you and your family are doing well! I wanted to provide a few updates on my work this past week for the residents of Arizona’s First Congressional District.

On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence to proclaim the separation of the 13 colonies from Great Britain. Our Declaration powerfully laid bare the reasons for our separation. 

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

247 years on, we continue to celebrate our Independence Day as a beacon for hope and freedom across the globe. Let us always remember that freedom is not free and honor the brave men and women who have sacrificed so much to protect our great nation.

Joyce, Olivia, Matthew, and I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful Fourth of July. May we never forget how beyond blessed we are to call the United States of America our home.

Updating the Form 1099 Reporting Threshold

ICYMI: I recently introduced the Small Business Paperwork Savings Act, legislation to increase the $600 reporting threshold for Form 1099 to account for inflation adjustments since 1954, when the IRS reporting rule was first established. 

If you're self-employed or a small business owner, you may not even realize you're in violation of the law if you don't file a 1099 with the IRS after completing each service. My legislation helps decriminalize our society and eliminates the paperwork burden for millions of hardworking Americans.

Last week, I joined Mornings with Maria on Fox Business to discuss the Justice Department's apparent preferential treatment toward Hunter Biden by preventing two IRS whistleblowers from properly investigating his business dealings. 

It's disturbing when these whistleblowers came before the Ways and Means Committee to sit through over 14 hours of depositions and walk us through concerning details of blatant obstruction. That should set off alarm bells about the double standard going on at President Biden's Justice Department. 

Presenting the Educational Achievement Award to Coca-Cola Scholar Zack Okun

On Wednesday, I presented the educational achievement award to Zack Okun of Desert Mountain High School, who was recently named a Coca-Cola Scholar. This prestigious scholarship is very competitive and awarded to only 150 high school seniors per year. Zack will enroll at Arizona State University this fall where he will be studying mechanical engineering. Congratulations Zack, and best of luck as you embark on this new journey!

What I’m Reading & Why It Matters

This week, I'm reading the Congressional Budget Office's (CBO) 2023 long-term budget outlook of what the federal budget and the economy would look like over the next 30 years if current law remains unchanged. In this report, CBO projects the deficit to initially decline to 5% by 2027 before growing each subsequent year until reaching 10% of GDP in 2053. Federal debt held by the public is also projected to reach 181% of GDP by 2053.
