Dear ,
I hope you and your family are doing well! I wanted to provide a few updates on my work this past week for the residents of Arizona’s First Congressional District.
Requesting Information on Funding Sources of Tax-Exempt Organizations
Last Monday, I sent a letter with Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08) to groups organized under Section 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) requesting information and input on existing rules and regulations governing tax-exempt organizations and whether foreign funds are flowing through these organizations to influence American politics.
Chairman Smith and I are concerned about the possibility that foreign nationals are influencing our elections by indirectly donating millions of dollars to organizations that spend on behalf of or against candidates for public office without concern about disclosure requirements that would shed light on how exactly their funds are being used.
Speaking at the Arizona Bankers Association Roundtable
I discussed the overwhelming scale of our country's debt at a roundtable hosted by the Arizona Bankers Association last week. Over the past 12 months, our government borrowed $72,932 every second. We must begin to take our debt seriously to save our children's futures.
2023 Congressional App Challenge Reminder
As a reminder, my office is hosting the 2023 Congressional App Challenge, and students are encouraged to register online and submit their apps by November 1st. This competition is aimed at encouraging middle and high school students to learn how to code by creating their own applications. It is open to all students who meet the eligibility requirements, regardless of coding experience. We strongly encourage students of all skill levels to participate, enabling them to learn how to create their own apps.
To learn more about the competition or to submit an app, please visit the CongressionalAppChallenge.us website for further guidelines.
Speaking at the Salt River Project Luncheon
Last week, I had the opportunity to be the keynote speaker at the Salt River Project's annual luncheon where I discussed my bipartisan legislation to expand pumped-storage hydropower in Arizona. This bill ensures our state's energy supply remains accessible and affordable for millions of customers in the region. After passing the House Natural Resources Committee in July, I'm looking forward to it coming to the House Floor for a vote soon.
Military Service Academy Applications Reminder
The online academy application portal for my office is open to eligible high school students residing in Arizona's First Congressional District who are interested in attending one of our nation's premier military service academies. To learn more about the congressional nomination process and how to submit an application, please review the application form here. I wish prospective students the best of luck and sincerely appreciate their interest in serving our country. The deadline to apply is October 6, 2023.
What I’m Reading & Why It Matters
This week, I'm reading about how Predictmedix AI Inc. is claiming that its artificial intelligence (AI) product suite can now detect early signs of diabetes by analyzing subtle biological indicators often undetected by conventional methods. I'm also listening to this Bloomberg podcast about how GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro were created to treat diabetes, but have recently been known to suppress appetites and induce weight loss. This podcast dives into the broad economic impact these drugs could have on our society.
Thank you for taking the time to read this update on my latest work in Washington, D.C. and Arizona’s First Congressional District! If you have any comments or concerns, I encourage you to reach out to my office.
Sincerely,
David Schweikert |
