District Update October 2, 2023

Dear ,

I hope you and your family are doing well! I wanted to provide a few updates on my work this past week for the residents of Arizona’s First Congressional District.

Congress Continues to Ignore the Scale of Our Fiscal Reality

On Friday, Republicans put forward a fiscally responsible package to keep the government open while Congress continues to work through the appropriations process. This bill would have cut discretionary spending by 30% while protecting Medicare, Social Security, defense and veterans’ funding. The package also included the strongest border security policies in decades, and established a bipartisan debt commission that I’ve worked on for years to address our nation’s fiscal health.

Unfortunately, 21 Republicans voted with the Democrats to defeat this package. As a result, a package that included higher spending levels negotiated by the Left passed the House in spite of the fact that our financial wheels are coming off the rails. With government borrowing close to $2.3 trillion in Fiscal Year 2023 alone, I could not vote for this package and allow the death spiral to continue unimpeded. I will continue to work to pass fiscally responsible appropriations bills to fund the government and curb Washington’s spending addiction.

The Left's "Tax the Rich" Policies Fall Short of Closing Budget Gap

In my floor speech last week, I teamed up with Rep. Mike Kelly (PA-16), my colleague on the Ways and Means Committee, for a lively discussion picking apart the far Left's tax proposals that only cover a fraction of the expected shortfalls and come up well short of saving our country from ensuing economic calamity. Early projections for Fiscal Year 2024 reveal that interest spending will nearly equal defense spending and could even top $1 trillion next year. With interest rates quickly moving away from us, it's past time for my brothers and sisters in Congress to pick up their calculators and start trusting the math.

Visiting With the Greater Phoenix Chamber

Image

Thank you to the Greater Phoenix Chamber for giving me the opportunity to emphasize the importance of our outrageous government spending affecting the hardworking people of Arizona's First Congressional District. I will continue to advocate for measures that promote fiscal responsibility to better serve our Arizona communities. Responsible spending on the federal level has a direct impact on our businesses and economy at home.

What I’m Reading & Why It Matters

Image

This week, I'm reading Brian Riedl's latest report for the Manhattan Institute which debunks several of the Democrats' "tax the rich" proposals that don't even come close to balancing the budget. If you frequently watch my floor speeches, you'll notice a similar pattern that Riedl and I take when pointing out the flaws in Democrats' efforts to aggressively tax the wealthy and corporations.

Thank you for taking the time to read this update on my latest work in Washington, D.C. and Arizona’s First Congressional District! If you have any comments or concerns, I encourage you to reach out to my office.

Sincerely,
