I hope you and your family are doing well! I wanted to provide a few updates on my work this past week for the residents of Arizona’s First Congressional District.

An Update on the Speaker's Race

For those keeping track, the U.S. House of Representatives has been without a Speaker for 20 days now because of the reckless decision by eight of my Republican colleagues to vote with Democrats to remove Kevin McCarthy, which has left the House effectively paralyzed.

Last week, I committed to my pledge to support our Conference's nominee each of the three times we voted on the House Floor, and I will do the same this week so that we can get back to addressing the serious issues affecting our country. 

Tonight, House Republicans will convene for a candidate forum where we'll hear from the nine Speaker candidates who will make their pitch on their priorities and vision for becoming the 56th Speaker of the House. Tomorrow morning, we'll hold an internal party election where Members of Congress vote on their preferred candidate, with the lowest vote-getter eliminated after each round until a candidate wins a majority of the Conference's support. Afterwards, the Speaker Designee heads to the House Floor, where they must garner 217 votes to become the next Speaker.

I remain hopeful that we will come together to elect a Speaker so that we can resume working on the important issues facing our district, state, and country. The exploding scale of our national debt, a worsening crisis at our southern border, and the unfolding conflict in the Middle East as Israel defends itself against Hamas demands our attention.

We are less than a week and a half out from the deadline for students to register and submit their apps for the 2023 Congressional App Challenge! What I’m Reading & Why It Matters

This week, I'm reading about how the 10-year Treasury yield surpassed 5%, a 16-year high, as the 10-year continues to push into uncharted territory with government borrowing and financing costs rising dramatically. I'll keep monitoring the 10-year figure in the coming weeks and months.

I'm also checking out this Bloomberg story on how Ozempic and other GLP-1s are taking the world by storm and could not only present a miracle cure for weight loss, but could potentially have protective effects on the heart, liver, and kidneys as well.

Lastly, I wanted to share this frustrating story on how the Seven Canyons Golf Club in Sedona has recently been torn up by herds of javelina. Unfortunately, our dear pig-like friends are the culprits once again.
