District Update April 8, 2024

Dear ,

I hope you and your family are doing well! Below, please find a few updates on my work last week for the residents of Arizona’s First Congressional District.

Number of Southern Border Encounters Released Into America Is Triple The Size Of Our District

Image

As of February, the number of illegal migrants that have been admitted into our country is more than triple the size of Arizona's first congressional district. As you can see displayed in the chart above, there have been substantially more admissions of migrants at the Southern Border just within this fiscal year. I have referenced countless examples of the atrocities that have come from this border crisis, especially considering that Arizona has been ranked as the top spot for illegal border crossings. Let's not forget when FBI Director Christopher Wray testified in front of Congress, warning public officials of the significant increase of the risk of terrorism and cited various migrant smuggling instances that are tied terrorist organizations.

In recent border news, U.S. Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens surfaced the apprehension of a migrant found in Texas who had tattoos resembling the most powerful gang in Venezuela. CBP Port Director Michael Humphries said his team at the Nogales sector seized a combined total of almost a million fentanyl pills, 9.8 pounds of fentanyl powder, 160 pounds of cocaine, 515 pounds of meth, and 2.4 pounds of heroin over the course of 12 events. In the past four days, the Nogales Sector also seized over 1.1 million fentanyl pills.

Join My Team at the Service Academy Fair

As your Congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives for Arizona’s First Congressional District, I have the privilege of nominating a limited number of students each year for scholarships to attend our U.S. military service academies. The U.S. service academies are among the most highly respected educational programs in the nation, and to be admitted to an academy applicants must not only meet stringent academic, physical and medical requirements specified by public law but must also receive a nomination.  As a cadet or midshipman at an academy, students will be provided a fully-funded four-year college education and the honor of attending an academy comes with an obligation and commitment to serve for a minimum of five years upon graduation.

To learn more about the congressional nomination process, students and parents are invited to attend this years' Service Academy Conference, which will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the library at Veritas Preparatory Academy.

Representatives of the Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, Military, and Naval academies will explain the unique academic, career, and military opportunities each school offers. Congressional staff will be present to explain the required Congressional application and nomination process. High school students are encouraged to RSVP here.

Keep Yourself Safe From Common Tax Scams

Image

I wanted to remind you all of the possible warnings of scams that are intended to steal your taxpayer information. You can be vigilant to these attacks by reporting suspicious hyperlinks from unrecognizable sources and educate yourself on other common tactics scammers use to obtain personal information. The IRS' annual Dirty Dozen campaign is designed to protect taxpayers from deceptive tactics and reminds you to be alert during this tax season.

As the filing season deadline fast approaches, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) urges taxpayers to act now. The deadline to file your taxes or file for an extension is Monday, April 15. Taxpayers are encouraged to review helpful tax tips on my website. The IRS has many resources available to taxpayers who need assistance in completing their tax returns, are looking to check the status of their refund, or find information about available tax credits. Avoid delays and penalties by filing before the April 15 deadline. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact my District Office staff at (480) 946-2411.

Recognizing Some Amazing Citizens of AZ-01

It was a pleasure to celebrate the ribbon cutting for Mr. Michael Gallagher’s business, Gallagher’s Gallery and Framing! Last week, some of my staff was able to present Mr. Gallagher and his team with a certificate of Congressional Recognition to honor the great work he provides to the Fountain Hills community. Mr. Gallagher provides essential services to artists and photographers and his intricate work and dedication to his craft is incredibly appreciated. Well done on this outstanding achievement, Mr. Gallagher. We wish you nothing but the best with your business and future endeavors!

What I’m Reading & Why It Matters

In an article written by the Wall Street Journal, inflation for some grocery items have increased over 50% since 2019, and the main products affected are the non-perishables. The Wall Street Journal notes that what is commonly referred to as the "center store"- from chips, to condiments, to sponges, and even dish soap- is experiencing the hike in response to the power trip between large retailers and suppliers. Since there is a longer production time for packaged, processed foods, the price increase of those items can outlast that of fresh produce, which makes their way from the soil to the shelves in a matter of days.

In recent innovation news, Pager Health has developed three new mechanisms utilizing generative artificial intelligence technology from Google Cloud to simplify and create cost savings for payers. Pager mentions the positive result that artificial intelligence implementation has on administrative productivity, like creating savings in call center staffing, patient management, and other general expenses. Pager, while in discussions of expanding their reach with national plans, works mostly with different Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, along with a handful of big insurers in Latin America.

Lastly, Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, warned shareholders of the potential 8% spike in interest rates within the coming years. This speaks to the first article I mentioned and how it pertains to the United States attempting to combat inflation. Dimon says he expects the Federal Reserve to implement a soft-landing, which would help the economy remain resilient despite the interest rate spike. He also added the factor that banks could experience instability should the interest rate spike continue.

Schweikert Says...

We often receive inquiries from folks who want to push for a local initiative. This week, I'm highlighting a question from Marnie P. in Carefree. She asks...
"Arizona state legislative bills and or state regulations and policies – who do you turn to?"

While Congress oversees federal regulations and benefits, the state of Arizona has oversight for their state benefits and policies. Do you have an issue with AHCCCS, state taxes, or the Motor Vehicle Department? Schweikert says your state representatives can assist you in these state matters. To look up your state representatives, click here.

If you are unsure, reach out to my District Office and my staff can direct you to the appropriate government entity for assistance.

Do you have any general questions that I can help answer? Do not hesitate to reach out to my offices at (202) 225-2190 or (480) 946-2411.

Thank you for taking the time to read this update on my latest work in Washington, D.C. and Arizona’s First Congressional District! If you have any comments or concerns, I encourage you to reach out to my office.

Sincerely,
