Dear ,

Moving right along to the month of March! Below, please find a few reminders and updates on my work for the residents of Arizona’s First Congressional District.

Last week, I outlined the potential dangers that would be imposed on American taxpayers if Congress fails to extend provisions included in the 2017 Tax Cuts & Jobs Act (TCJA). The average tax hike per person by letting TCJA expire would amount to $2,853 annually. In fact, roughly 62 percent of tax filers will experience that tax hike. On top of that, if Congress passed a reconciliation package without extending TCJA, taxes would increase dramatically for the average American family. If we don't undergo a substantial modernization of government, there is no way to make the math work. See below for some more highlights from the speech:

Joint Economic Committee Chairman Schweikert Leads Budget Resolution Debate on House Floor

As the Chairman of the United States Joint Economic Committee, I hosted debate for the recently-passed House Budget Resolution last week on the House Floor. Under the 2017 Tax Cuts & Jobs Act (TCJA), the bottom 20 percent of earners saw their federal tax rate fall to its lowest level in 40 years. The top 1 percent paid MORE income taxes than ever before – over 40 percent of all taxes. The top 10 percent of earners now pay roughly 72 percent of all income taxes.

The catastrophic impact to families if the expiring provisions of the TCJA aren't extended raises the average Americans taxes by $2,853, with 62 percent of all taxpayers subject to higher taxes.

I want to remind everyone that no major entitlement program cuts were included in any provision within the resolution. As Majority Leader Steve Scalise [LA-01] pointed out on the House floor during the debate, names of certain government programs like 'Medicare' and 'Medicaid' are not mentioned within the text of the Budget Resolution.

**A note from the nutritionist: "White beans have been shown to help people with diabetes and pre-diabetes. The beans reduce blood sugar and insulin levels. They are also thought to be a carb blocker. These beans were also shown to reduce the glycemic index of foods and stop carb absorption into the bloodstream. In 2003, a 12-week study showed that subjects lost an average of seven pounds consuming the beans." -Cherie Calbom, MS

Better, Faster, Cheaper: How Innovation is Expanding Optimism for the Future

Image

Many of you know my fascination with innovation and the further implementation of technology into different facets of many industries. The up-and-coming innovation is extensive, and luckily, there are thousands of scholarly studies and research pieces being released daily that expand on progress of these projects. Not enough members of Congress take the time to capitalize on how these innovative advancements actually promote the health and well-being of our society. This segment dives deeper into technological implementations that are actively making life better and cheaper for our brothers and sisters.

How will artificial intelligence change
medical training?

Comparing the influence of artificial intelligence in medicine to how automation changed the role of the pilot, Shinjini Kundu expands on how AI has the power to transform medical practice. Advancements have left those in the medical field with more data and medical knowledge than ever before. Kundu argues that AI has the ability to generalize and make decisions, unlike regular automation which can only perform its routine. The mass amount of medical knowledge available to practitioners, coupled with how so many more clinical residents are specializing shows the need for intervention of AI. For example, AI based calculators instead of prognostic calculators could include more variables and provide more accuracy. AI could refine best practices, suggesting possibilities of treatment and dosage amounts. While there are risks in relying too heavily on AI, it has the potential to improve operations and safety in the medical field like automation did with aviation.

It’s possible to reverse diabetes—and
even faster than you think

Recent studies show that actions done when type 2 diabetes symptoms are in early stages can reduce symptoms or even induce remission, hopefully eliminating the illness altogether. Without proper insulin, the body cannot move glucose throughout the body correctly to give the rest of the body energy and nutrients. Weight loss is the most effective way to induce remission because insulin resistance is linked to high levels of visceral fat. Exercise is another productive way to induce type 2 diabetes remission because it impacts weight loss. It also allows your muscles to absorb more glucose from the blood as they grow. Lifestyle and diet play into working to eliminate diabetes or induce remission as foods with fiber, protein, and low levels of refined grain can minimize blood sugar spikes and slow digestion. At least eight hours of sleep, eight glasses of water, and reduced stress can lower blood sugar levels as well. In a current program working to induce remission using these techniques, 80 percent of participants have been successful in two years.

Schweikert Suggests...

This week, I wanted to highlight a question from Ross B. in Scottsdale. He asks...
"What is the effect of raising the national debt at the same time you reduce revenue through a tax cut?  Do you think that the approximately $8 trillion increase in national debt under Trump (about a 39 percent increase) had a significant impact on the interest expense? Would it be fair to say that his administration created $400 billion of your gross interest expense of $1.4 Trillion? Is that where we are headed? Is that a math problem?"
The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget found that since 2001, the last time the federal government ran a budget surplus, 77 percent of the actions accounting for all the new debt were bipartisan. Fiscal stimulus following the 2008 financial crash and COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 were significant drivers of the now more than $35 trillion in national debt. Partisan Democratic actions — mostly spending hikes — account for 12 percent of that additional debt, while partisan Republican changes — mostly tax cuts — account for 8 percent. Schweikert Suggests reading deeper into the research linked above for further analysis.
