A Snow-Capped North Scottsdale

This was my view when I landed back in Arizona from Washington last week. What a pleasant surprise to see the beautiful snowcapped mountains of the northern part of Arizona's First Congressional District.

My Conversation with Hedgeye TV: Will Washington Tackle Debt Crisis?

As you'll often hear me speak about in Congress, our U.S. national debt is spiraling out of control. Few in Washington are willing to confront it head-on. Last week, I joined Hedgeye CEO Keith McCullough and veteran analyst Josh Steiner for an important discussion on where America is headed. We discussed the urgent fiscal challenges facing the U.S., including:
1. The Debt Crisis – Is Washington serious about addressing runaway spending? 2. Political Reality – With Democrats largely sidelined, how will Republicans approach fiscal responsibility? & finally, 3. The Tax Cut Debate – Can meaningful reform happen in the face of tax cuts?
Mr. McCullough often echos a common sentiment of mine, by stating, “I’m not a Republican or a Democrat—I’m a Canadian.” This willingness to emphasize bipartisanism and confront facts over feelings helped me to reiterate that math is neither Republican, nor Democrat. My Conversation at the National Association for Business Economics Policy Conference

Last week, I was able to attend the 41st annual National Association for Business Economics (NABE) Policy Conference to discuss new dynamics facing business and policy leaders. The 2025 conference delved into the rapidly evolving economic landscape and how it's being shaped by intensifying geopolitical interaction, transformative technological advancements, and mounting fiscal imbalances. Through in-depth discussions and expert insights, the conference explored how businesses and governments can navigate these pressing and persistent issues to build resilience and foster growth. Thank you to the NABE team for having me as a speaker!
National Kidney Month

Your kidneys may be small—each about the size of a fist—but they perform vital functions that affect your entire body. These remarkable organs filter waste from your blood, regulate fluid levels, control blood pressure, stimulate red blood cell production, and keep your bones healthy. Unfortunately, kidney disease has become a hidden epidemic in America. Approximately 37 million adults have chronic kidney disease (CKD), yet 90 percent don't know they have it. This "silent disease" often shows few symptoms until it's advanced, making prevention and early detection crucial. The leading causes of kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure, which are responsible for up to two-thirds of cases. Other risk factors include heart disease, obesity, family history, and being over 60. The good news is that early detection can slow or prevent kidney disease progression. Simple tests can check kidney function:
• A blood test for GFR (glomerular filtration rate) shows how well kidneys are filtering
• A urine test for albumin can detect protein in urine—an early sign of kidney damage
This National Kidney Month, I encourage you to: 1. Know your risk factors 2. Talk to your doctor about kidney testing 3. Adopt kidney-healthy habits: control blood pressure and diabetes, eat a balanced diet, stay active, and stay hydrated 4. Learn more at kidney.org

Add in some fat from nut butter, and the smoothie will be much more sustaining. A scoop of protein powder can round out your blended drink to be more like a meal in a glass. Better, Faster, Cheaper: How Innovation is Expanding Optimism for the Future

The U.S. Army is recognizing the need to diversify its drone fleet by incorporating less sophisticated, more affordable models to effectively compete in modern warfare. Adversaries are more commonly deploying swarms of inexpensive drones, challenging the U.S. military’s reliance on high-end, costly unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Incorporating cheaper drones allows for mass production and deployment, enhancing operational flexibility and resource maximization. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has demonstrated the effectiveness of low-cost drones in neutralizing more expensive military assets. The Department of Defense’s Replicator initiative aims to expedite the development and deployment of low-cost, attritable drones and reflects a strategic commitment to adapting procurement and operational strategies to contemporary threats.
At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 in Las Vegas, a variety of innovative and unconventional technologies were unveiled. This includes a $200 plastic spoon– the Kirin Electric Salt Spoon– which uses a mild electrical charge to enhance the perception of saltiness in food, aiming to help users reduce actual salt intake. Tombot's Jennie, a robotic Labrador puppy intended to offer psychological benefits, provides companionship for individuals with conditions such as dementia, depression, PTSD, and anxiety. Brisk It Zelos 450 Smart Grill is AI-powered and utilizes Wi-Fi connectivity to optimize cooking processes.
The popularity of artisanal baking– French flour in particular– has risen due to unique characteristics found in French flours. These strains often have different protein contents and milling processes compared to American flours. Bakers aiming to replicate traditional French breads find that using French flour helps achieve the authentic crust and crumb structure associated with these loaves. This trend reflects a broader movement in the baking industry towards experimentation with various grains and flours to cater to evolving consumer preferences for both health-conscious and gourmet products. By diversifying the types of flour used, bakers can offer a wider range of products that stand out in a competitive market, meeting the demands of customers who are increasingly interested in the origins and types of ingredients in their food. |
