Oversight Subcommittee Examines Organ Procurement Accountability

Image

The Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee held a hearing this morning on concerns involving tax-exempt organ procurement organizations. Members heard testimony from a whistleblower, a donor’s family member, and policy experts who outlined serious failures in the system. This includes breakdowns in oversight and gaps in basic safeguards meant to protect patients and donor families. Witnesses also detailed where current practices fall short and offered ideas to strengthen accountability and improve results for the public. I am grateful to each of them for coming forward and contributing to a conversation that carries real consequences for families across the country.

Recognizing Amazing Citizens of AZ01!

I recently attended an Eagle Scout ceremony for Zeffrey Furman and Troy Tunnell as they earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Their hard work and commitment reflect the strength and character we see across our communities. It was a privilege to celebrate this achievement with their families.

TSA Update

Image

The Transportation Security Administration announced a new $45 fee that will apply to travelers who do not present a REAL ID at airport security starting in 2026. The fee will allow eligible passengers to complete identity verification at the checkpoint when they show an acceptable alternative form of ID. TSA is encouraging travelers to update their identification before the enforcement date so they can avoid the charge and move through security without delays.

Getting Ready For Tax Season

Image

The One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act brings major tax relief for working families starting next year. Analysis from the Tax Foundation shows that taxpayers in our region, including those in Maricopa County, are projected to see average federal tax cuts of more than $4,400 in 2026.

Under the bill, many people will no longer pay federal tax on tips or overtime pay. Others will benefit from new deductions on items like car loan interest and a new deduction available to seniors.

If you plan ahead now by gathering pay stubs, W-2 or 1099 forms, and bank statements it will help make filing smoother next spring. You can also set up an online IRS account to track your tax records and speed up any refunds.

Medicare Open Enrollment Ends December 7th

Image

Quick reminder that Medicare open enrollment is now and runs through December 7. This is your annual opportunity to review and make changes to your current Medicare plan, whether you're looking to switch plans, add prescription coverage, or explore new options that better meet your needs.

Unfortunately, this period also attracts bad actors looking to take advantage of seniors. Please stay vigilant and avoid sharing personal information with unknown sources.

What I'm Reading and Why it Matters

The retirement crisis is here

Axios reports that the nation is moving toward a retirement crisis as more Americans reach retirement age with insufficient savings and rising living costs. The shrinking number of workers supporting a growing retiree population puts added pressure on Social Security and other social safety nets. This matters because without responsible reforms millions of seniors could face greater financial strain in the years ahead, and Congress will need to confront these long-term challenges.
