A Weekly Note From Rep. Ciscomani.

I spent a packed week back in AZ-06, touching every corner of the district from Willcox to Casa Grande. We had the chance to join a number of exciting events, like the groundbreaking of Lucid’s newest production facility. I also managed to fit in a little bit of fun, from playing dodgeball with students at Sonoran Science Academy to a visit to the Chiricahua National Monument.

Celebrating National School Choice Week.

This week, as we recognized National School Choice Week, I visited Sonoran Science Academy to meet with the students, teachers, and faculty there. Arizona leads in school choice, providing access to high-quality education for all of Arizona’s students. This includes traditional public schools, charter schools, career technical education programs, private schools, STEM-oriented schools, excellent community college programs, and beyond.

I was able to join the students for an exciting game of dodgeball and meet Charlette Davis, the AZ-06 winner of the Congressional App Challenge. Charlette’s app, "The Best Pets App", helps people choose which pet they want to adopt and identifies the most popular pets in their location. It was great to see all the impressive projects the students have been working on and I am excited to see what the future holds for them!

FUNDED: $95 million for the I-10.

After months of pressuring the Department of Transportation (DOT), I am thrilled to say that $95 million has been secured for the widening of the I-10. This grant funding will allow for critical improvements needed on one of the most dangerous stretches of highway in Arizona.

In August, I sent a letter to DOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg calling for the project’s funding, in addition to pressuring the secretary in a hearing. While it is overdue, I am pleased to see DOT recognize the importance of the project nationally and allocate the necessary resources. This is the last step of the funding process and I'm excited to see the work begin. Honoring Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.

I kicked off last week by joining State Representative Matthew Gress and other Arizonans in their effort to memorialize Sandra Day O’Connor in the U.S. Capitol. Justice O’Connor is a shining reflection of all the American Dream has to offer and I can’t think of anyone more deserving than her to join the ranks of our nation’s most influential figures in the Capitol complex.

Earlier this month, I introduced legislation to redesignate the post office in Duncan, Arizona – Justice O’Connor’s childhood hometown – in her honor. (H.R 7011) Justice O’Connor leaves behind an irreplaceable legacy and efforts like these, both in Arizona and across the nation, will keep her name alive for generations to come.

Forever grateful to our first responders.

Last week I joined 4Tucson Blessings Breakfast honoring our first responders, firefighters, law enforcement, communications staff and elected officials as a new year begins. It was great speaking to the people that keep our district safe everyday.

My family and I are forever grateful for the sacrifices and service of so many in our community. I will continue to fight for you in congress. Thank you for your service.

Driving the economy.

Congratulations Lucid Motors on the expansion in Case Grande! This 3 million square foot facility in #AZ06 will create thousands of jobs, keeping AZ on the cutting edge of the electric vehicle industry. With an impressive 500-acre property in Casa Grande this facility is the first green field EV factory in North America. They will be producing over 10,000 electric vehicles every year. Proud to join hundreds of employees to celebrate this milestone!

Visiting the Chiricahua’s.

This year is the 100th anniversary of the Chiricahua National Monument – a beautiful and unique landscape in #AZ06 that deserves to be named a National Park! One of my first bills I introduced when I started in Congress was to convert the National monument to a park to encourage more tourism to the area. (H.R. 1479) Thank you to the National Park Service for the great tour and briefing.

Profiles of the American Dream: Humberto Lopez.

Two words sum up Humberto Lopez’s American Dream journey: hard work and generosity.

It started in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico. He was 11 years old when his father died unexpectedly, forcing his mother and five siblings to move to Nogales, Arizona and live with his grandmother.

As the oldest son, he worked tirelessly from a young age, washing dishes, digging ditches, working in the fields and bagging groceries. But they still needed state assistance to make ends meet.

“My mother would get so embarrassed,” he said. “She would have her head down. I remember holding her hand and telling her, ‘One day I’m going to take care of you. You won’t have to go through this.’”

Education was his path to a better future. Humberto enrolled at Cochise, earning an associate degree in 1967, and then went on to receive his bachelor's in accounting from the University of Arizona in 1969. Only six years later he cofounded HSL Properties, which today is one of our state’s largest apartment and hotel owner-operated property management companies.

The tremendous success of his company has allowed Humberto to become one of Tucson’s most generous philanthropists. With his wife Czarina, they created The H.S. Lopez Family Foundation, which is focused on making a positive impact on the people in our region who need it most. He also created endowed chairs at Sarver Heart Center and the Eller College of Management.

“I had a good life,” he said. “If I had to do it all over again, that’s exactly the way I would want to grow up. It taught me how to work hard.”
