A Weekly Note from Rep. Ciscomani.

Last week’s activities ranged from reading to the students at Butterfield Elementary School to introducing our 18th bill in Congress. Safe to say it was another packed week, both in Arizona and Washington, D.C.! Additionally, I had the chance to meet with constituent groups visiting the Capitol, participate in hearings alongside my colleagues on the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, and vote to hold DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas accountable for his failures at the border.

Supporting Customs & Border Protection.

With morale, recruitment, and retention at an all-time low for CBP, it’s crucial that we send a message to Border Patrol that we have their backs.

Last week, I introduced my 18th bill, H.R. 7369, the Customs and Border Protection Hiring and Retention Act (CBP HiRe Act) to improve CBP’s ability to recruit, hire, and retain personnel. With a top concern of Border Patrol’s being manpower, this bill will be critical in supporting their mission. Whether it’s hiring bonuses or improved benefits, we must prioritize maintaining and bolstering the men and women in green who defend our borders day in and day out.

Celebrating the Love of Reading Week.

Laura and I kicked off the Love of Reading Week on Monday by reading to the 3rd and 5th grade classes at Butterfield Elementary School. With six children of our own, we've personally experienced the benefits – and joys – that reading has brought to all of our kids. Seeing the educational growth and vibrancy at AZ-06 schools has been truly inspiring.

It is my greatest honor serving our next generation in Congress. A heartfelt thanks to all the dedicated teachers and staff at Butterfield for their unwavering commitment to nurturing our future leaders!

112 Years of Statehood.

Last Wednesday marked Arizona's Statehood Day, commemorating 112 years of being the greatest state in the nation. Arizona's diverse blessings, from its breathtaking desert sunsets to the resilience of our cattle ranchers and the innovation of our copper industry, have given us so much to be grateful for. Serving our corner of the state in Congress is a privilege I deeply cherish, and I remain committed to being the strongest advocate for Arizonans that I can be on Capitol Hill.

Bring Them Home.

Last week, I had the opportunity to highlight on the House floor the plight of Omri Miran. Omri is a 46-year-old husband and father of two young daughters who is currently being held hostage by Hamas. My heart breaks for Mr. Miran, his family, and the 133 other hostages with stories similar to his. Watch my floor speech calling for the return of the hostages here.

It’s time to bring Omri home – it’s time to bring them ALL home.

Holding the VA Accountable.

Last week I questioned Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Denis McDonough in regard to recent allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct within the VA. Specifically, the VA reportedly delayed the investigation and their subsequent response to the allegations because of the victim’s race. It’s egregious that the investigation was delayed at all and I was proud to fight alongside my colleagues on the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee to hold the VA accountable for this misstep.

Watch my line of questioning to the secretary here.

Profile of the American Dream: Sydnee Pierpont

Most kids get in and out of Butterfield Elementary School in seven years. Not Sydnee Pierpont. She’s been at the Marana school a total of 16 years. And she has no plans to leave. Sydnee started at Butterfield like most people – as a student. It was her neighborhood school, a short two-minute walk from her childhood home. But she returned a few years later as a 4th grade teacher, then became a 1st grade teacher and now helps run the place as its associate principal.

“It is unique,” she says of the career path that brought has back to where it all started.

Sydnee still lives in the neighborhood, now about five minutes away from the school. And two of her three kids are Butterfield Bobcats. She says she always wanted to be an educator, a goal shaped by the teachers who inspired her. She’s passionate about working with children, helping them overcome challenges and celebrate their accomplishments.

“There are so many different paths for them to achieve the American Dream,” she says. “We need to find the path that works for them. We have to support kids where they want to be – to help them find what they really love.”

No question Sydnee really loves what she does. And that right there – loving what you do – is a key part of her American Dream.

“I do what I do because kids need someone who believes them,” she says. “It’s such a blessing. If you don’t love it, you’re not going to want to be there. You’re not going to do the best job you can do. It’s not about the paycheck. It’s about making a difference.”
