Profile of the American Dream: Sydnee Pierpont
Most kids get in and out of Butterfield Elementary School in seven years. Not Sydnee Pierpont. She’s been at the Marana school a total of 16 years. And she has no plans to leave. Sydnee started at Butterfield like most people – as a student. It was her neighborhood school, a short two-minute walk from her childhood home. But she returned a few years later as a 4th grade teacher, then became a 1st grade teacher and now helps run the place as its associate principal.
“It is unique,” she says of the career path that brought has back to where it all started.
Sydnee still lives in the neighborhood, now about five minutes away from the school. And two of her three kids are Butterfield Bobcats. She says she always wanted to be an educator, a goal shaped by the teachers who inspired her. She’s passionate about working with children, helping them overcome challenges and celebrate their accomplishments.
“There are so many different paths for them to achieve the American Dream,” she says. “We need to find the path that works for them. We have to support kids where they want to be – to help them find what they really love.”
No question Sydnee really loves what she does. And that right there – loving what you do – is a key part of her American Dream.
“I do what I do because kids need someone who believes them,” she says. “It’s such a blessing. If you don’t love it, you’re not going to want to be there. You’re not going to do the best job you can do. It’s not about the paycheck. It’s about making a difference.”
