A Weekly Note from Rep. Ciscomani.

Last week was a monumental week for AZ-06 as we secured more than $26 million in this year’s first appropriations package. Every corner of our district from Sierra Vista to Tucson to Casa Grande will receive critical funding for projects in their communities. Delivering these types of results for our district is what I was sent to Washington to do, and it remains my top priority.

March is also one of the busiest times for groups to visit Washington, D.C. Whether it was 8th graders touring the Capitol or organizations advocating for our veterans, I had the pleasure of meeting with nearly two dozen groups last week. One special visitor included my friend Jane Strain, who joined me as my guest for this year’s State of the Union. Watch last week’s #CiscomaniMinute for more!

SECURED: $26 million to AZ-06!

I am thrilled to announce that $26 million is headed to AZ-06! Between 13 projects in all 5 counties, we are bringing home millions for our district in this year’s appropriations package. From day one, I promised to use my position on the House Appropriations Committee to deliver real results to Arizona and this package makes good on that promise.

This bill not only supports several initiatives in Arizona but also reduces wasteful spending, supports our national defense, and rejects divisive policies in the federal government. Securing impactful wins like these is what I was sent to Congress to do and remains my top priority.

Supporting our first responders.

Last week I met with a number of groups representing our brave first responders, including the Arizona Fraternal Order of Police and the Professional Firefighters of Arizona. These groups advocate on behalf of our law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMTs, and so many others. It was great to meet with them and discuss ways we can support all the incredible first responders in our communities. Thanks for stopping by!

Attending the State of the Union.

It was a pleasure to have my friend, Jane Strain, accompany me as my guest to the State of the Union. An Army veteran herself, Jane is a tireless advocate for Sierra Vista, our military communities, and all our veterans across AZ-06.

While the company was great, I was ultimately disappointed in President Biden’s speech. A President’s State of the Union is an opportunity to cast a vision for our country. Instead, it was divisive and disconnected from our real needs. Border security remains the top priority for Americans, yet President Biden provided no meaningful answers to a crisis of his own creation. Last year, in the Spanish State of the Union Response, I addressed the challenges facing our country and the American Dream. While those persist, so does the American spirit that built this country. As long as we have that, I remain optimistic for our future and focused on fighting for our families.

Advocating for our veterans.

Last week I met with AZ Chapter of Disabled American Veterans and AZ Leaders of Veterans of Foreign Wars. These groups advocate on behalf of our veterans all around the district. It was great to talk with them about the bills I have introduced and cosponsored to serve our 70,000 veterans in the district. Thanks for stopping by the D.C. office!

Profiles of the America Dream: Sharon Megdal.

“If you want to get something done,” according to an old proverb, “ask a busy person.”

Busy people and getting stuff done just might be two critical ingredients to making the American Dream a reality.

With that in mind, meet Sharon Megdal.

As the director of the University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center, Sharon plays a leading role in helping our fast-growing state manage and understand its most precious resource. She’s also a professor, an award-winning researcher and a member of the Governor’s Water Policy Council.

“I call myself a water professional,” she says.

An overview of Sharon’s history of civic involvement shows just how deeply committed she is, not only to her chosen field, but to Arizona and public service. The Arizona Corporation Commission, State Transportation Board, Arizona Medical Board, American Water Resources Association, International Arid Lands Consortium, Central Arizona Project, United Way, Tucson Medical Center – Sharon’s board experience includes all these organizations.

“I’m a policy focused person and I believe in public service,” she says. “I want to be able to contribute to public policy debates.”

And she has. Sharon was instrumental in advocating for legislation introduced by Congressman Ciscomani to reauthorize the Transboundary Aquifer Assessment Program, a program supporting binational research on groundwater security, quantity and quality in border communities.

Sharon says that being able to connect people and regions, to foster international dialogue and bridge the academic and non-academic communities, is one of the most rewarding aspects of her work.

As for what it takes for this very busy person to get stuff like this done, Sharon puts it this way: “I like to say competence and confidence go a long way.”
