A Weekly Note from Rep. Ciscomani.
Last week kicked off a 4-week stretch of in session work here in Washington. From questioning Biden administration officials to celebrating National Small Business Week to welcoming Stefany from Tucson to discuss early childhood education, there was no shortage of important activity happening on Capitol Hill.
I am also excited to announce we recently surpassed $2 million returned to constituents through the casework process. That is through work to secure corrected IRS returns, Social Security checks, and veterans’ benefits. Learn more about this milestone and other activity both at home and in Washington, D.C. on this week’s #CiscomaniMinute.

Zero to Three.
I met with Stefany Paredes and her family from the Zero to Three program in Tucson. Childcare providers & early education teachers, like Stefany from Tucson, continue to face staffing issues that cause hardships for classrooms and after-school programs. Zero to Three supports Head Start, Infant-Toddler Court Teams, and the Child Care Development Block Grant (CCDBG).
Recently, I introduced the Head Start Education and Development Workforce Advancement and Yield (HEADWAY) Act, H.R. 7467 bipartisan legislation with Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) to help address staffing shortages at Early Head Start programs. These programs are critical for early literacy & development, and I am committed to their success.

Celebrating our small businesses.
With Arizona being the 4th fastest growing state for small businesses, we had much to commemorate during National Small Business Week last week.
During my time with the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, I saw just how powerful our small business community is. I have always said that it is the government’s job to create an environment that allows our entrepreneurs, business owners, and small business community to flourish. Last week the House passed a number of bills to cut red tape for our small businesses and make sure they have an environment to thrive. With 650,151 small businesses in Arizona employing over 1 million individuals, these entrepreneurs, companies, and employees are the true economic drivers for our state.

Veterans’ benefits: PASSED
Over 70,000 veterans call Arizona's 6th congressional district home and as your Representative, it is my duty to ensure they receive the benefits they earned. Last week, H.R. 4016, the Veteran Fraud Reimbursement Act, legislation I led with Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA-11) PASSED the House. Our veterans have rightfully earned the benefits they receive, and in the event they are defrauded of these benefits, the last thing they should face is the burden of bureaucratic red tape. This bipartisan legislation will allow our veterans to be swiftly and efficiently reimbursed if they do fall victim to fraud. I’m thrilled to see our legislation pass the House floor, a major step towards becoming law.

Commercializing Arizona’s rest stops.
Arizona is one of the fastest-growing states in the country and has some of the most pressing needs in terms of transportation. As we look at ways to both increase financial resources and update our transportation infrastructure, we must examine commercializing our rest stops. Commercialized rest stops add convenience, safety, and revenue to the states that utilize them. Sadly, Arizona is prohibited from doing so because of an outdated federal law. I questioned U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg last week on this issue and pressed him to work with me and other Arizona lawmakers to do away with this double standard. Watch my line of questioning to Secretary Buttigieg here.

Highlighting stories from AZ-06.
One of my favorite parts of my job in Congress is highlighting the incredible people, organizations, or groups in our district. Last week, I had the chance to honor the life of Arizona’s hero Jacob Dindinger on the House floor. At just 20 years old, Jacob lost his life while serving our community so bravely in Tucson. Jacob's dedication to public service shined bright during his time as an EMT for American Medical Response. It was my great honor to share his story with my colleagues in Congress.
Through these floor speeches, I am able to share just a few stories of the amazing people in Arizona’s 6th District each week. If you or your organization would like to be recognized on the House floor, please don’t hesitate to contact my office!

In the news.
Updating Arizona’s busiest border port a priority for business leaders ABC 15
“If we can improve the technology there and we can have as many lanes as we want, but if we don’t have the staffing to actually be on those lanes, then it’s all for nothing as well. So, this needs some real investment,” Ciscomani said.

Profiles of the American Dream: Southern Arizona Centenarians
This week we honor a very special group of men and women: southern Arizonans who have reached age 99 or older.
May is Older Americans Month and each year at this time the Tucson Medical Center and Pima Council on Aging join to celebrate our neighbors and loved ones who’ve reached this major milestone.
If perseverance and fortitude are hallmarks of the American Dream, these folks have it in spades! Think of all that has happened in our state, nation and world over the past century. The advances in science and technology, the tests of strength and character, the rise and fall of nations and empires – it boggles the mind.
One hundred years ago, Arizona’s population was smaller than Tucson is today. The University of Arizona had 1,500 students. A new 6-cylinder Oldsmobile would set you back $955. President Calvin Coolidge delivered the first radio broadcast from the White House. And India was ruled from London by the king of England.
In acknowledging our community’s centenarians, we pay tribute to their enduring spirit – the spirit that is at the heart of the American Dream.
