A Weekly Note from Rep. Ciscomani.
We kicked off the week in Washington right in the middle of a 4-week stretch of session. From questioning Biden administration officials on critical mineral supplies to celebrating National Teachers Appreciation Week to hosting many meetings with constituents, industry leaders, and stakeholders, it was a busy week! Last week was extra special as one of my six favorite constituents, my son Lucas, joined me in D.C. It was great to have him on Capitol Hill with me, an important reminder that all the work I do here is to keep the American Dream alive for the next generation. For a full recap of the week’s activity, watch the #CiscomaniMinute!

Celebrating AZ-06 teachers.
As we celebrated National Teachers Appreciation Week, we recognize all the hard-working teachers and educators in AZ-06 who invest in our students, cultivate their talent, and empower them to become the future generation of innovators and leaders. Growing up, I am grateful that I had the privilege of having so many influential teachers in my life that shaped me into who I am now. As a product of Arizona’s public school system, education will always be a top priority for me. I will always push for policies that enhance our education system, prioritize our students, and support our teachers.

Securing America’s critical mineral supply.
As part of my work as a Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations (SFOPs), I have the important role of holding the administration accountable for their foreign policy decisions. Last week, I questioned Biden administration official, Scott Nathan, CEO for the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, on the urgent need to invest in critical mineral production capabilities with our allies and end our reliance on China for these minerals. Critical minerals are essential components in many of today’s rapidly growing clean energy technologies, such as electric vehicles (EVs) and batteries.

Sounding the alarm on our open border.
I took to the House floor to denounce Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ open-border policies and sound the alarm on his unlawful, mass parole programs. New documents subpoenaed by the Homeland Security Committee uncover the disturbing lengths Secretary Mayorkas goes to in ensuring inadmissible migrants are let into the United States. The Homeland Security Committee found that DHS used over 50 airports, including the Phoenix Airport, to help illegally process more than 400,000 inadmissible migrants into the country. This program is in direct violation of the law and yet another reason Secretary Mayorkas must be removed from his position.

Judiciary Committee Field Hearing.
Last week I hosted the Judiciary Committee for a Field Hearing in Sahuarita to discuss the ongoing border crisis. Our border is broken. We are experiencing the consequences of the Fentanyl crisis firsthand everyday at the southern border. From public safety to trade, commerce and other industries like agriculture, no part of Southern Arizona is untouched by the border crisis. I heard many impactful stories from ranchers to families to law enforcement officers. We need action from the Biden administration now.

Headed to D.C.? Call us!
Before I flew back to Arizona, I had the pleasure of meeting with the Loesch family before their tour of the White House, which my team helped set up! It’s always great seeing folks from AZ-06 experience our nation’s Capital in unique ways. We can do the same for you! If you are headed to Washington D.C. and want to tour a federal building, like the U.S. Capitol or the White House, reach out to my team at 202-225-2542 or through my website.

In the news.
Mr. Batty goes to Washington
The Gila Herald
Recently, Pima Town Manager Vernon Batty traveled to Washington D.C. for leadership training and received a crash course in playing the Washington game… One Congress member Batty has certainly connected with is our district’s Rep. Juan Ciscomani, who welcomed Batty on his Washington visit with open arms while wearing a town of Pima baseball cap. Oro Valley Turns 50
Tucson Local Media
Mayor Winfield was joined by U.S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani and Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs in formally commemorating Oro Valley’s milestone. Oro Valley “started as a small town with only 1,200 residents” 50 years ago, and has grown “into a booming community” with a population of over 48,000 Arizonans, Ciscomani said. Letter: Support the Border and Our Allies
AZ Daily Star
Recently, while a bi-partisan Congress passed critical legislation to support Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, I was proud to see Rep. Juan Ciscomani also lead a push to ensure border security was considered alongside foreign aid. Representative Ciscomani has made sure to prioritize the border and ensure the strength and partnerships of our military, no matter what the news of the week is in Washington, D.C

Profiles of the American Dream: Vickie Shoopman.
Vickie Shoopman is a mom, a military spouse and a nurse with more than 45 years’ experience as a healthcare executive. She has long been active in a variety of Tucson-area community and philanthropic causes.
But the Arizona Heroes Memorial now taking shape in Oro Valley may represent a highpoint for someone with an amazing track record of giving back. “There isn’t going to be anything like it west of the Mississippi,” Vickie says. “It will be a place to honor those who serve, those who protect our community, our state and our nation.”
The memorial pays tribute to first responders, healthcare workers and members of our armed forces. A fall opening is planned. Vickie is the organization’s vice president and director, and her husband Ron, a retired Air Force general, is among the many community members who’ve helped get the project off the ground.
“Only in America could I have had the amazing opportunities that I have enjoyed in my life,” Vickie says. “My work in the healthcare field has been meaningful and fulfilling, but my life has been enriched beyond measure as a military spouse and community volunteer. Throughout my life I have had the privilege to serve others and I could not think of a better path for me.”
