A Weekly Note from Rep. Ciscomani.

Last week, my daughter Zoe joined me in D.C., and we kicked off the week by accompanying Speaker Johnson in a press conference discussing President Biden’s Executive Order on the border. We ended the week at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson ‘Youth of the Year’ brunch to celebrate the accomplishments of nine exceptional members.

Serious problems call for serious solutions.

For over three years, our southern border has been in chaos. While border communities like ours welcome any type of policy improvement, President Biden’s recent Executive Order falls short. On his first day in office, President Biden signed multiple Executive Orders that enabled this crisis. Now, this action comes too little, too late. Moreover, this acknowledges that the President has the authority to address this crisis - one he claimed at various times not to have. While this is a first step, much more must be done by the White House to actually secure our border.

I will always be a strong voice for our border communities and make sure that it is top of mind for my colleagues in Congress, no matter the news of the week. I joined Speaker Mike Johnson and House Republican leadership on Tuesday to discuss my disappointment in President Biden’s recent border measure.

Touring El Rio Community Health Center.

On Thursday, I joined the El Rio Community Health Center to tour their facility and speak about different legislation impacting our healthcare industry, specifically the need to expand access to quality and affordable healthcare. El Rio serves one out of every ten Tucsonans with 400,000 annual patient visits. With 1,800 employees, it was great to meet some of their dedicated nurses, doctors, and staff.

Whether it’s increasing transparency in Medicare or strengthening our health care workforce, I continue to look for ways to improve our community’s health care. Recently, I introduced the GROWTH Act (H.R. 6078), which expands eligibility for certain Health and Human Services (HHS) nursing grants to include community colleges. These institutions have been found to be instrumental in training health care workers and by strengthening their programs, we help fill the gaps left by the health care workforce shortage.

Delivering for our veterans.

Last week, the House of Representatives passed the FY 25 Military Construction and Veterans' Affairs appropriations package to support our troops, our veterans, and their families, and to bolster our national security. This bill fully funds veterans benefits', ensures our military installations are robust and ready for action, and invests in the quality of life of our service members, veterans, and their families. Our district is home to over 70,000 veterans - one of the largest populations in the country - and two major military installations, Fort Huachuca and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. As your Representative, I will always work to support our active-duty personnel, veterans, and their families, and invest in our military to strengthen our national defense.

This is the first of 12 packages that Congress will vote on to fund our government. As Arizona’s only member of the House Appropriations Committee, I am fighting to bring every dollar possible back to our district while crafting a fiscally responsible budget. While Congress examines the 11 other appropriations packages, I remain committed to keeping our government open and working for the people while being a careful steward of our tax dollars.

Visiting Sun Corridor in Tucson.

Last week, I spoke to local officials and business leaders at Sun Corridor in Tucson. Sun Corridor works to bring together private, public, academic, and nonprofit groups to promote southern Arizona’s economic development. As Arizona's economy continues to boom, it's crucial that we facilitate job opportunities and growth in our community.

In Congress, I am dedicated to being a strong partner on the federal level to efforts like those at Sun Corridor. From bringing $26 million back to AZ-06 in funding to passing bipartisan border legislation that cracks down on high-speed chases, I aim to deliver real solutions to our community's most pressing needs.

Next generation of leaders.

Last week, I hosted a Service Academy Send-Off for the students my office nominated to U.S. military academies. This year, I was proud to nominate 14 students from across our district to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Naval Academy, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Appointments to our military academies are often the beginning of a career dedicated to serving our country, and I’m confident these individuals are the next generation of American leaders. Each and every one of these students worked tirelessly, applying to their respective schools and interviewing in front of our Academy Selection Board. I know I am joined by our entire district as I wish them the very best in their journeys at their respective schools this fall.

Happy Customers: The Wright Family.

Great to see folks from AZ-06 experience Washington D.C. in unique ways, like touring the Capitol or the White House! In May, my team set up tours of both the Capitol and White House for the Wright family from Tucson. Check out what they had to say about their experience:

“On behalf of my entire family, I want to thank you, Bella, Becky, and Juan for helping to arrange our recent tour of the White House and Capitol.  It was a wonderful experience for my grandchildren who learned a lot about American government and democracy. It was also fun for Linda and me.  We got to reconnect with our years working on the Hill as congressional aides for Congressman Udall and McNulty” says Bruce Wright. “Bella was an outstanding tour guide.  Please pass on to her our thanks. I hope I didn’t bore her with my old “war” stories.”

If you're planning a trip to D.C., please contact my office for assistance in arranging visits to our federal buildings. To ensure availability, kindly request White House tickets through our office at least 90 days prior to your intended visit, as we experience a high volume of visitors.

Profiles of the American Dream: 28th Annual Fathers of the Year Award.

With Father’s Day rapidly approaching, this week we pay tribute to five men who nurture the American Dream – the recipients of the 28th annual Father of the Year Award.

This year’s honorees – Marcel Dabdoub, Tim Medcoff, Jeff Ronstadt, Jason Wong and Chief Master Sergeant Terry Hemmitt– were recognized June 8 at an amazing event hosted by the Tucson Chapter of the Father’s Day Council.

In selecting a Father of the Year, the council looks for men who’ve mastered the balancing act of career, civic involvement and, of course, fatherhood. This year’s winners certainly are well deserving.

The council also is motivated by a very important cause – raising much-needed funds for Type 1 diabetes research. Since its inception in 1995, the council has provided nearly $5 million to support improving the lives of children afflicted with this lifelong condition.

Congratulations and Happy Father’s Day!
