A Weekly Note from Rep. Ciscomani

Last week was spent in Washington, D.C. with Kenny, attending committee meetings and voting on appropriations packages before returning home for our next district work period. As always, I enjoyed meeting with various advocacy groups to hear their concerns and seeing families from AZ-06 visiting on summer vacation. Whether touring the Capitol or discussing issues important to Arizonans, it was wonderful meeting with all of you!

Speaking on AZ-06's Critical Minerals

On Wednesday, I addressed the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Global Energy Institute Critical Mineral Summit to discuss my work bolstering support for American energy independence. With Arizona's rich mining history, we're at the forefront of the work being done with critical minerals and critical materials, which play key roles in everything from energy to national security.

This is why I introduced H.R. 8446, the Critical Mineral Consistency Act, to ensure parity between the definitions of critical minerals and critical materials within the federal government to create a more resilient U.S. supply chain. It was great to speak about my efforts to support this work in Congress – thank you for having me!

Securing Our Border

I had the chance to speak to the Border Trade Alliance’s Board of Directors last week about my work to address the crisis at the southern border. This organization represents 4.2 million public and private sector entities, with their board comprised of industry leaders and stakeholders. As we work to secure our border, we must also ensure cross border trade, tourism and commerce can continue to thrive.

As the border remains a top priority in Arizona’s 6th District, I am committed to continue working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle as well as stakeholder organizations, like the Border Trade Alliance, to find solutions to these issues.

Fighting for AZ-06

As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I am proud to have a seat at the table when crafting the budget for FY2025.

Last week, the House passed three more appropriations packages for Defense, Homeland Security, and State and Foreign Operations. Additionally, we continued to progress our work in committee, considering bills on the subcommittee level. I am proud to announce that in the initial stages of these packages, I have provisionally secured $34 million for water, transportation, infrastructure, and public safety projects in our district. Should these funds be signed into law, we will have secured $60 million for the district during my freshman term in Congress. I will always work to leverage my position as Arizona's sole House appropriator to deliver federal funds to our communities while ensuring a strong sense of fiscal responsibility.

Expanding Veterans Benefits

As virtual education grows in popularity around the country, our veterans should have the same access to these programs as their civilian counterparts.

Last week, I joined the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee to discuss my bipartisan bill, the VETS Opportunity Act (H.R. 7896), which aims to do just that. This bill updates our veterans’ GI benefits to cover hybrid skilled trade programs, increasing access to more programs and new jobs. Our veterans should be able to use their benefits however best fits their needs. Glad to see my effort be considered within the committee, and get one step closer to becoming law.

Taking Care of Our Seniors with AARP

Arizonans Dana and Jack, advocates with AARP, joined me in D.C. to discuss housing for seniors in AZ-06. It's crucial that we continue to work together to protect Social Security and Medicare, ensuring our seniors are able to live their golden years comfortably.
Our seniors have spent their lives preparing for retirement, now depending on their savings for financial security. They deserve to spend their retirements how they planned, and we must ensure they have access to the resources and programs they rely on. I'm grateful to the AARP for their partnership and dedication to taking care of our seniors.

Profile of the American Dream: Former Sierra Vista Mayor Rick Mueller

Former Sierra Vista Mayor Rick Mueller had service in his blood, born to a military family and growing up as an “Army brat.” In his younger years, his family moved across the world, from Georgia to Germany. When it came time to go out on his own, he stayed in the family business, joining the Army just days after he graduated from the University of Nebraska. He would go on to spend nearly two decades in the military, ending a decorated career in 1995.

Upon his retirement, he moved to Sierra Vista, which began a new career in service. Mueller frequented Planning & Zoning Commission meetings and served on the Citizens’ Advisory Commission before running for City Council. Mueller then served as an elected official for 22 years — 10 years on the City Council and 12 years as Mayor  — during which he championed the development of Sierra Vista as a regional hub for commerce, medical services, higher education, and tourism, and focused on redeveloping Sierra Vista’s point of origin, the West End. After a lifetime of service, from his decorated military career to his exceptional tenure of service to Sierra Vista, Rick Mueller passed away in May 2024. He was a true pillar of our community, a devoted public servant, and a dear friend. His leadership and strong voice will be missed in Sierra Vista and Cochise County.

To Mayor Mueller’s family, friends, and co-workers, we extend our condolences and express the deep appreciation of the life of service he lived. Sierra Vista would not be where it is today without him.
