A Weekly Note from Rep. Ciscomani.

Last week, I was back in Arizona for another productive district work period and 4th of July celebrations. Being back in the district and hearing from all of you is the most important part of my job. Whether it’s in line at the grocery store or in meetings across the district, I am grateful to everyone who shares their thoughts and concerns with me.

TONIGHT: Dial-in to our telephone townhall.

TONIGHT at 6pm MST, I am hosting a telephone townhall to speak with Arizonans from across the district about the issues impacting our communities. As always, I appreciate the opportunity to talk with you all directly about my work in Washington and my commitment to continue pushing our district, and the nation, forward. To participate in this evening’s event, dial-in at 855-840-6970. Hope to talk to you soon!

Standing with our veterans.

As a nation, we owe our veterans a tremendous debt of gratitude. When duty called, these brave men and women answered, risking life and limb for their fellow Americans. As the Representative of over 70,000 veterans, caring for our veterans will always be a top priority.

This is why I introduced the Rural Veterans’ Improved Access to Benefits Act (H.R. 8881) to ensure veterans have permanent, cross-state access to certified healthcare providers for their required medical disability exams. This effort builds on two of my previous efforts, the VET MEDS Act (H.R. 5470) and the Veterans Exam Expansion Act (H.R. 5983), and is the ninth veterans focused bill I have introduced. Red tape should not stop our veterans from accessing care when and where they need it, whether that means crossing state lines or crossing the street.

Inflation: The unwanted guest at this year’s cookout.

Inflation affects us all and impacts every aspect of our lives – from groceries to school supplies and everything in between. On average, families in Arizona are now spending $12,800 more annually to afford basic necessities compared to three years ago.

With 4th of July cookouts and celebrations, families were on track to spend 30% more this year than previous years. As a father to six, I know just how unsustainable life is with these prices.

Profile of the American Dream: Joe Ortega.

Longtime Casa Grande Joe Ortega worked in supermarkets for more than 40 years. He and his wife Sherry have lived in the same house for more than 50 years. Soon they’ll celebrate their 60th anniversary.

But this past 4th of July had special meaning for the 84-year-old Mexican-born retiree. He celebrated American Independence Day for the first time an American citizen.

After decades of procrastination, Joe recently decided to fulfill his dream – the American Dream – and exchange his old green card for the benefits and responsibilities that come with citizenship.

“I got rid of my procrastination,” Joe told the Casa Grande Dispatch. “I figured ‘Oh my God, I’m getting old, I’m gonna die one of these days.’ The one thing that I have not done in my life is become a citizen. The need was there for myself and for my family.”

Not that Joe hasn’t been doing his part. He’s been active in his church, community organizations and served in the Navy during two tours during the Vietnam War.

No wonder Joe passed the citizenship test on the first attempt.

As Sherry put it, “He is now a U.S. citizen. He has done more for this country than people that were born here and I’m very proud of him. I call him my hero. He fought for this country and when he enlisted he wasn’t a citizen. He never took being in the United States for granted.”
