A Weekly Note from Rep. Ciscomani.

From Sierra Vista to Marana, we spent last week crisscrossing AZ-06 to make the most of our district work period. While I’m heading back to D.C. this week, the August district work period is right around the corner.

Last week’s meetings and events touched on everything from our military to border security to small businesses and entrepreneurs. For a full recap of the week’s activity, watch the #CiscomaniMinute

Discussing border security with Sentrillion.

Last week, I met with the team at Sentrillion in Sierra Vista to discuss their work on our southern border. They collaborate with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on their Security Deployment Program, which serves 300 facilities along 8,000 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border. Securing our border remains a top priority for me in Congress, and I will continue to work with private industry partners to ensure our CBP officers and agents, local law enforcement, and all other officials at our southern borders have the support they need.

As the former Vice Chair for the Arizona-Mexico Commission, I understand that Arizona's border should be a source of strength, not a vulnerability, which is why I advocate for policies to enhance commerce and tourism with Mexico while punishing bad actors that threaten our security.

Q&A with CREW Tucson.

As southern Arizona faces an affordable housing shortage, it’s important to hear from the local stakeholders and leaders in the impacted industries. On Thursday, I engaged in a great Q&A session with Tucson's Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) Network to discuss solutions to the housing crisis and the challenges inflation created for the real estate industry and homebuyers. CREW was established to advance opportunities for women in real estate and has grown to include over 100 members. It’s amazing to see the organizations involved in our community and the leadership their members provide to the real estate industry in southern Arizona.

As a member of the House Appropriations Committee's Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development (HUD), I have a seat at the table when crafting our federal government’s housing programs and initiatives. Hearing from members of the CREW Network strengthens my understanding of the issues and allows me to be better informed when I go back to Washington.

Two years of 988.

Last week marked two years since the launch of the 988 hotline, which provides free and confidential crisis support and suicide prevention resources. Mental health is a critical aspect of our overall health, and I am dedicated to advocating for policies that expand access to the necessary care and resources our community needs. We must work together to continue removing the stigma around mental health and ensure that individuals who are struggling can find the support they deserve. By raising awareness, increasing access to counseling, and supporting crisis services, we can create a stronger and more resilient community. I am committed to being a strong advocate for mental health initiatives that make a positive impact on the lives of our neighbors, friends, and loved ones.

In the last two years, the 988 hotline has grown to serve English and Spanish speakers. Additionally, our veterans can get veteran-specific services by pressing 1 after connecting with the line or texting 838255. If you or a loved one you know are struggling, dial or text 988 today.

Profiles of the American Dream: Amelia Sainz.

Amelia Sainz’s trick to award-winning salsa is the tomatoes. She uses both fresh and canned because it really brings out the tomato flavor.

In Graham County, where Amelia has taken home multiple blue-ribbons at the annual SalsaFest, her salsa is legendary.

So is Amelia.

The long-time Safford resident celebrated her 100th birthday on July 7 and her story has American Dream written all over it.

She grew up in a bilingual home with 11 brothers and sisters who picked cotton to earn money for the family. Their mother made the family’s clothes by hand. And to cool off in the summer they used an irrigation canal as their swimming pool.

“The family didn’t have a lot of money,” she recently told the Eastern Arizona Courtier. “But as long as we had three square meals, we were happy.”

Amelia’s contributions to the county where she’s lived her entire life include serving five terms as the Clerk of the Superior Court, an elected position that put her in charge of issuing everything from marriage licenses to jury summonses. In her 20 years in office, she never had a challenger.

She has also devoted countless volunteer hours to her church and other community organizations like the Graham County Historical Society and the Mount Graham Hospital Foundation. As a founding member of the United Way of Graham County, Amelia has had her picture taken presenting more giant charity checks than anyone can remember.

Her trick for staying healthy? “You have to be brave enough to live.”
