A Weekly Note from Rep. Ciscomani.

This week marks our first week back in AZ-06 for the August district work period. From introducing a new bill to fast-track construction of affordable housing to visiting the Tucson VA Medical Center with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Denis McDonough, we touched on a variety of issues this week.

As Congress spends the entire month of August back in our districts, I’m looking forward to seeing you all around town. Whether it’s in line at the grocery store or in meetings across the district, I am grateful to everyone who shares their thoughts and concerns with me.

Advocating for affordable housing in AZ-06.

Last week, I introduced my new bipartisan bill to tackle the affordable housing crisis in our district. The current shortage is driving up rental costs and housing prices, making it more difficult to find a place to call home. The bill, titled the Speeding Up Production of Essential Residences (SUPER) Demonstration Act (H.R. 9195), would create a new pilot program through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to fast-track construction of affordable housing by eliminating unnecessary red-tape for developers and encouraging more public-private partnerships in the industry. By streamlining the construction process, this legislation will increase the supply of affordable homes and address the worsening affordability crisis.

Hosting VA Secretary McDonough.

On Friday, I hosted VA Secretary McDonough in southern Arizona for a visit to the Tucson VA Medical Center, meetings with local VA leadership, and briefings on veterans’ services available in our community. AZ-06 is home to over 70,000 veterans and caring for them is not a responsibility I take lightly. With one of the biggest veteran communities in the country, it’s critical that Secretary McDonough sees how our veterans’ services operate, what they are doing right and what they can improve.

His visit also opened the door for discussions on how we can better serve our veterans both here in Arizona and across the nation. As a member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I continue to look for ways to improve the VA and the benefits and services our veterans receive. A special thank you to the Tucson VA for having us last week!

Supporting local prosecutors.

I recently co-sponsored the Helping Improve Recruitment and Retention Efforts for Prosecutors (HIRRE) Act (H.R. 9225). This bipartisan legislation will create a Department of Justice grant program, inspired by the successful Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program, which has effectively supported law enforcement hiring and retention for over 30 years. Prosecutors play a crucial role in our community by helping combat crime and the ongoing fentanyl crisis.

The HIRRE Prosecutors Act authorizes $10 million annually for the grant program through 2029, ensuring a stable and consistent funding stream for state, tribal, and local prosecutor offices across the nation. In addition to hiring, these grants will also fund training and retention initiatives, ensuring that prosecutors are well-prepared and supported throughout their careers. Thank you to the National District Attorneys Association for expressing support for this effort.

Happy Customers: The Fernandez Family.

Last week, my team set up a tour of the Capitol for the Fernandez family from Marana. Check out what they had to say about their experience!

“What a pleasure it was to visit Congressman Ciscomani’s D.C. office. His staff is warm and welcoming and took us on a fantastic tour of our nation’s Capitol,” said Michelle Fernandez.

If you're planning a trip to D.C., please contact my office for assistance in arranging visits to our federal buildings. To ensure availability, kindly request White House tickets through our office at least 90 days prior to your intended visit, as we experience a high volume of visitors.

Profiles of the American Dream: Delaney Schnell.

A dozen years ago, a tiny Tucson eighth grader who had a real knack for platform diving was profiled on the front page of the sports section of the Arizona Daily Star. Her name was Delaney Schnell, she was 13 at the time and about to take off for Adelaide, Australia to compete in the World Junior Diving Championships.

Since then, it’s Delaney’s diving career that has really taken off. The University of Arizona grad student is now among nearly 600 U.S. athletes representing our country in Paris at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

"It's an honor because there's only so many people in the world that get to do that, and it feels pretty cool to be part of that exclusive club," she says.

Delaney started doing gymnastics when she was four, got into swimming and then caught a glimpse of the bold souls hurling themselves off a platform 10 meters – more than 32 feet – above the water.

“I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, they’re amazing,’” she told the Star in that 2012 story. “I thought it was scary. When I got up to the 10-meter platform I’d think, ‘How do people dive off this?’”
Delaney figured it out.

While doing her undergraduate work at UA, she was named the Pac-12 Women's Freshman Diver of the Year, earned three the Pac-12 Diver of the Year titles, holds university records in platform and 3-meter dives, won six Pac-12 diving championships and won an NCAA national championship in 2023.

The best athletes are, by definition, perfectionists. They’re focused, goal oriented and they push themselves to the limits of their physical and mental abilities to be the best they can be. That’s how their dreams come true. Or in Delaney’s case, an American Dream.
