October 7th Commemoration.

On the solemn anniversary of the October 7th attacks, Laura and I were deeply honored to join our Jewish community at the Jewish Community Center in Tucson for a heartfelt commemoration. I am proud to stand with Israel and against the scourge of antisemitism, reaffirming our commitment to fight hatred and promote understanding. Together, we must continue to support and uplift one another, ensuring that such tragedies are never forgotten and that we work towards a future of peace.

Veteran Service Leader Award Ceremony.

Since my first day in office, I’ve consistently heard about Veterans who continue to serve their country long after their military service. I was honored to recognize and present the Veteran Service Leader Award to 36 Veterans from all five counties for in our district for their continued service to our communities, even after answering their nation’s call in the military. This has been one of the most impactful and touching experiences I’ve had since taking office. Thank you to all our veteran leaders who make Southern Arizona a better place to live.

Visiting Desert Life Pharmacy.

I had the pleasure of visiting Desert Life Pharmacy in Tucson, recognized as the 'Best Pharmacy/Drug Store' every year since its opening.  Led by the dedicated Brianne Spaeth, I updated her team on my efforts in Congress to prioritize rural pharmacies, including co-sponsoring the PATIENT Act of 2023 to make healthcare costs more transparent and banning unfair pricing practices by Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs).

Local independent pharmacies are critical to rural communities as they are often the only medical provider for hundreds of miles. During my visit, I heard directly from constituents about the importance of local pharmacists who understand the needs of their communities firsthand. This personal connection is irreplaceable by large chain or mail order pharmacies. It's essential to support independent practices serving our local, rural communities. Pharmacy closures force rural residents to travel long distances to receive healthcare, placing an undue burden on those with limited resources and increasing the risk of delayed treatment and worsened health outcomes. It’s inspiring to see such commitment to community health and well-being.

Hosting a Women’s Health Roundtable.

As your Representative and a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, I am committed to pushing legislation, funding, and other efforts to address the funding gap in women’s healthcare innovation. It was an honor to host this roundtable and hear directly from distinguished panelists, experts, and my constituents about the best ways to improve women’s healthcare and support women and families in southern Arizona, and across the nation.

Visiting the Southern Border.

I recently visited the border near Sasabe, AZ, alongside Senator Lankford and National Border Patrol Council VP Art Del Cueto. We met with Border Patrol agents to receive updates on the migrant camps being set up by cartels. It's clear that the crisis at our southern border is unsustainable. Cartels are exploiting vulnerable individuals, creating severe humanitarian and security challenges. Securing the southern border remains my top priority, and I am committed to finding real, common-sense solutions to tackle this crisis.

Laura and I were honored to present a Congressional Certificate at the opening of Villa Peru, which is bringing modern Peruvian flavors to our community in Tucson! Businesses like Villa Peru are vital to supporting our local economy, providing meaningful jobs and fostering a sense of community. Wishing this establishment continued success!

Profiles of the American Dream.

If you want proof of the wisdom in the old saying “the apple never falls far from the tree” just look at Maria M. Martinez and her dad.

Colin J. N. Chauret was a fighter pilot who fought in three wars over a 31-year military career. He logged over 7,400 flying hours in 40 different planes , flew 100 combat missions and survived three crashes.

Maria, the seventh of Colin’s nine children, is in a different kind of battle – a battle to educate people about breast cancer. “I don’t want to be a hero,” she says. “I want to be an educator.”

The 66-year-old retired registered nurse was diagnosed with breast cancer twice and has since become a passionate advocate for her fellow survivors. She spends countless hours working to boost awareness of a disease that takes the lives of more than 40,000 women every year.

Armed with a sense of purpose that her dad would surely recognize, Maria’s mission is to make information about breast cancer accessible and to fight for policy changes that could result in better care for breast cancer survivors.

“My mantra is education and awareness, not fear anxiety,” she says. “I have been blessed. I really am blessed to be here today. And that’s why I do what I do. That’s why I share my story.”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For more information, please check out https://www.breastcancer.org/.
